The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a weather outlook predicting a mix of sunshine and cloudiness across the country from Saturday to Monday. The forecast, issued on Friday in Abuja, indicates sunny skies with patches of cloud over the northern region on Saturday, with chances of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna states during the morning hours. By the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba states.
North Central and Southern Regions on Saturday
For the North Central region, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory during the morning hours. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over parts of Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory. In the southern region, moderate rains are expected over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos, and Bayelsa states in the morning, with moderate rains forecast across the entire region later in the day.
Sunday Forecast: Thunderstorms Across Many States
On Sunday, NiMet envisages thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states in the northern region during the morning hours. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are predicted over parts of Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa states. For the North Central region, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Niger, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory in the morning, spreading across the entire region during the afternoon or evening. In the southern region, light rains are forecast over parts of Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Rivers states in the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rains expected across the entire region later in the day.
Monday Weather: Partly Cloudy Skies and Thunderstorms
Monday will see partly cloudy skies over the northern region, with chances of thunderstorms accompanied by light rains over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa, and Yobe states during the morning hours. The agency predicts thunderstorms with moderate rains across the region in the afternoon and evening. For the North Central region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are anticipated in the morning, followed by thunderstorms with moderate rains over the entire region later in the day. The southern region is expected to have a cloudy atmosphere with prospects of light rains over parts of Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states in the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rains forecast across the entire region later in the day.
Public Safety Advisory
NiMet urged the public to take adequate precautions, advising that loose objects be fastened to avoid collision, as strong winds might precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur. The agency warned that expected continuous rains over the coastal areas of the South have good prospects of flash flooding. Residents are advised to avoid driving or wading through flood waters and to refrain from driving under heavy rain. Additionally, people should disconnect electrical appliances from sockets and stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches. Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.
