Rafa Corporation, a leading player in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, has announced a major investment in what is now Nigeria’s largest continuous soap manufacturing facility. The state-of-the-art plant, located in Ogun State, boosts the company’s annual soap production capacity by 300,000 metric tonnes, significantly reducing dependence on imported raw materials and creating over 2,000 direct jobs.
Strategic Investment for Market Leadership
The new facility, which commenced operations in July 2026, represents a landmark in Nigeria’s industrialisation drive. According to Rafa Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Adebayo Ogunlesi, “This investment underscores our commitment to supporting the Nigerian economy by producing high-quality soap locally, leveraging advanced continuous manufacturing technology that ensures consistent product quality and operational efficiency.”
The plant spans 15 hectares and integrates automated systems for saponification, drying, and packaging. It is designed to produce a wide range of bar soaps, including antiseptic, medicated, and beauty varieties, catering to both domestic and export markets.
Economic Impact and Local Content
By establishing this facility, Rafa Corporation aims to reduce Nigeria’s annual soap import bill by an estimated ₦25 billion. The company sourced 80% of its machinery from local fabricators, in line with the government’s backward integration policy. Additionally, the plant will consume 200,000 metric tonnes of palm kernel oil and other locally sourced inputs annually, benefiting thousands of smallholder farmers across the South-South region.
“This facility is a testament to the viability of local manufacturing in Nigeria. It will create a ripple effect across the value chain, from raw material suppliers to logistics providers,” added Mr. Ogunlesi during the facility’s commissioning ceremony.
Technology and Sustainability
The continuous soap manufacturing process uses a closed-loop system that recycles 95% of process water and captures waste heat for energy recovery. The plant is powered by a 5 MW solar hybrid system, reducing its carbon footprint by 40% compared to conventional soap factories. This aligns with Rafa Corporation’s sustainability targets, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2030.
Government and Industry Reactions
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Nkechi Obi, praised the investment as a model for industrial transformation. “This plant demonstrates that with the right policies and private sector initiative, Nigeria can achieve self-sufficiency in essential consumer goods,” she stated. The facility is also expected to earn foreign exchange through exports to West and Central African markets, projecting $12 million in export revenue in its first year.
Industry analysts note that Rafa Corporation’s investment positions it to compete with multinational giants in the soap market, which is valued at over ₦1 trillion in Nigeria. The company’s market share is expected to rise from 18% to 25% within two years.
