The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) has commended the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals for achieving a crude oil processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day (bpd). The lawmakers described this development as a major milestone for Nigeria's energy sector and a reflection of the country's industrial potential.
Committee Statement on Refinery Performance
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the Committee noted that the refinery's performance exceeded its 650,000 bpd nameplate capacity during a test conducted by its process licensors. This achievement demonstrates world-class engineering, operational efficiency, and strong strategic investment in Nigeria's economic future.
Consolidating Global Status
The lawmakers observed that the feat further consolidates the refinery's status as the world's largest single-train petroleum refinery. It reinforces the refinery's expanding role in boosting domestic refining capacity, reducing reliance on imported petroleum products, and strengthening national energy security.
Economic Transformation Driver
According to the Committee, the development reflects the vision and commitment behind the project. The refinery has become a key driver of economic transformation through job creation, foreign exchange savings, industrial growth, and value addition across the oil and gas value chain.
The Committee further observed that increased refining capacity would help stabilize petroleum product supply, improve Nigeria's competitiveness in regional and global energy markets, and enhance government revenue generation.
Adherence to Standards
While congratulating the management and staff of the refinery, the Committee urged sustained adherence to high operational standards, environmental sustainability, and continued collaboration with stakeholders to ensure maximum economic benefit for the country.
