The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has reopened the application portal for its Conditional Grant Scheme (CGS), offering a non-repayable N50,000 grant to eligible nano and micro businesses across the country. This initiative is part of the federal government's broader strategy to enhance access to funding for small enterprises that often face challenges securing loans from financial institutions.
Scheme Objectives and Benefits
According to SMEDAN, the Conditional Grant Scheme is designed to improve the productivity and sustainability of small businesses while fostering entrepreneurship and employment. Successful applicants will receive a one-time grant of N50,000, which can be utilized for purchasing equipment, boosting working capital, expanding operations, improving productivity, and creating job opportunities. The agency emphasized that this funding is a grant, not a loan, meaning recipients are not required to repay the amount or pay interest, provided they comply with the programme guidelines.
The scheme specifically targets nano businesses operating at the local government level. SMEDAN outlined the programme's key objectives, which include supporting nano and micro enterprises, promoting entrepreneurship, reducing unemployment, encouraging business expansion, improving productivity, strengthening local economic development, and creating new jobs.
Eligibility and Application Requirements
To qualify, applicants must be eligible nano or micro enterprises that meet the scheme's requirements. The application process requires providing basic business details, including full name, email address, phone number, business name, CAC registration number (where applicable), business industry, and number of years in operation. SMEDAN has provided a registration link for interested business owners to apply.
The grant can be used for various business-enhancing activities, such as purchasing equipment, technology upgrades, business expansion, capacity building, market expansion, and working capital. Beneficiaries may also be required to participate in monitoring and evaluation exercises and submit periodic reports to ensure proper utilization of the funds.
Job Creation Condition
As part of the scheme's job creation conditions, businesses that receive the grant must employ at least one additional person. This requirement underscores the programme's focus on generating employment opportunities within local communities. SMEDAN noted that the initiative is separate from the Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme, although both offer N50,000 grants to eligible nano businesses.
Related Government Support
In a related development, the Nigerian government has also announced plans to provide zero-interest loans of up to N100,000 to market women, small-scale traders, and artisans through its upcoming MarketMoni and TraderMoni programmes. These initiatives will offer interest-free loans with zero collateral, a 3-month moratorium before repayment, and nationwide coverage across all six geopolitical zones, further supporting small business growth in Nigeria.
