Two Agricultural Students Sentenced for Brutal Sheep Explosion Incident
Two agricultural students have been handed prison sentences for a horrifying and sadistic attack on a sheep, which involved beating the animal to death and inserting explosive devices into its body. Leighton Ashby, aged 22 from Beckett Road in Ashford, Kent, and Oakley Hollands, aged 20 from Mussenden Lane in Horton Kirby, Kent, appeared at Hove Crown Court on Monday, February 23. Both individuals, who were students at Plumpton College at the time of the offense, had previously admitted to killing the sheep in a field near Ditchling Beacon, East Sussex, on November 2, 2023.
During the sentencing, Judge Jeremy Gold delivered a stern rebuke to the defendants. He emphasized that their backgrounds in farming and their enrollment in agricultural studies made their actions particularly alarming and difficult to understand. The judge described their behavior as callous and frankly sadistic, noting that the attack was carried out for their own perverse satisfaction.
Evidence and Consequences
Footage of the attack, showing Ashby carrying out the assault, was discovered by police on Hollands' mobile phone. Additionally, the ear tags of the deceased sheep were found in a nearby property, further linking the students to the crime. In his remarks, Judge Gold highlighted that the probation service considers both men to present a high risk to animals in the future.
As a result of their actions, Ashby was sentenced to two years in prison, while Hollands received a 20-month term in a young offender institution. Both individuals have also been disqualified from owning animals for a period of 10 years, underscoring the severity of their offense.
