From Healthcare Insight to Farmer Protection: The Birth of Yemert
Udokanma Georgewill's journey into agricultural technology began unexpectedly while assisting her mother with health insurance. This routine task revealed a profound truth about vulnerability and protection, sparking a critical question: if basic healthcare leaves people exposed, what about the farmers who sustain entire food systems? This question became the foundation for Yemert, an innovative platform designed to transform agricultural livelihoods.
Building a System Rooted in Reality
Georgewill recognized that many smallholder farmers in Nigeria lack smartphones and consistent internet access. Instead of developing complex digital tools requiring ideal conditions, Yemert adopted a practical approach: a USSD-first platform accessible via basic mobile phones. This decision wasn't about following trends but about respecting farmers' actual circumstances and ensuring genuine accessibility.
The platform addresses three interconnected challenges farmers face:
- Crop risk protection to safeguard against bad seasons, droughts, or price crashes
- Structured market access to provide stable income opportunities
- Carbon financing opportunities that recognize farmers' contributions to climate value
Trust Building Through Consistent Engagement
Georgewill emphasizes that agricultural innovation requires patience and trust-building rather than rapid scaling. Yemert initially moved slowly, prioritizing listening over speaking and demonstrating reliability through repeated engagement. This approach proved successful as farmers began requesting Yemert's expansion to their communities, with information spreading informally between villages faster than any official rollout plan.
Current Impact and Future Goals
Today, Yemert is preparing to reach 150,000 farmers nationwide. For Georgewill, these numbers represent more than business growth—they signify reduced uncertainty for families, increased stability for farmers, and stronger resilience for communities. She believes that when farming becomes less risky, entire food systems and economies benefit.
The Core Philosophy Behind Yemert
At its heart, Yemert operates on a simple yet powerful principle: those who feed everyone else should not bear disproportionate risk alone. Georgewill's mission began not with a conventional business plan but with an unforgettable question about systemic imbalance. Through USSD technology and farmer-centered design, Yemert aims to make protection, dignity, and stability fundamental components of agricultural systems rather than privileges.
