Borno State Governor Unveils Fleet of 20 Electric Buses for Urban Commuting

In a significant move to address transportation challenges, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has officially inaugurated 20 electric-powered luxury buses for daily commuting in Maiduguri metropolis and Jere Local Council. This initiative is designed to cushion the impact of recent petrol price hikes on both transporters and commuters across the state.

Launch and Deployment Details

The buses, which were initially inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on December 20, 2025, alongside 3,000 electric bicycles, 500 electric tricycles, and 100 electric vehicles, aim to enhance commuting both within and outside Borno. The roll-out commenced on Friday, April 3, featuring a diverse fleet:

  • 17 buses with a 49-seat capacity
  • Two buses with a 37-seat capacity
  • One bus with a 28-seat capacity

Governor Zulum emphasized that these buses are being deployed across major routes in Maiduguri and its environs to alleviate the burden of rising transport costs, exacerbated by the five-week Middle East crisis. The fully air-conditioned and energy-efficient vehicles can cover more than 400 kilometres on a single charge, making them a sustainable option for urban travel.

Infrastructure and Operational Support

To ensure seamless operations, the administration has established the largest electric vehicle charging terminal in Nigeria, capable of charging up to 50 vehicles simultaneously. This infrastructure supports the massive deployment of the buses and complements existing fleets of buses and salon cars procured earlier by the government to improve urban commuting.

In a bid to protect residents from the ripple effects of the global energy crisis, the Borno Express Transport Service (BETS) has been directed to maintain a subsidised fare rate of N50 per drop. This measure aims to provide affordable transportation for all, including students, civil servants, traders, and other residents.

Positive Impact and Commuter Feedback

The intervention has already begun to yield positive results, with noticeable reductions in congestion and improved access to affordable transportation. Commuters have praised the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful for tens of thousands of people, including pupils, traders, and workers in Maiduguri.

Some commuters shared their experiences: "This transportation initiative of the governor is indeed commendable. We are not feeling the impact of the rising transportation costs, as fares remain at N50 per drop. We thank Governor Zulum for the gesture." Another added, "The initiative forms part of Governor Zulum’s effort to promote green energy, modernise the transportation system, and provide relief to the vulnerable."

Overall, this deployment underscores Governor Zulum's commitment to promoting green energy, modernising transportation infrastructure, and offering economic relief to Borno's residents amidst ongoing challenges.
