NCAA Launches Probe Into Mid-Air Altercation Between Social Media Personalities

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has officially confirmed it will investigate a physical confrontation that occurred between popular social media figures Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, and comedian Freedom Atsepoyi, popularly called Mr Jollof, during a flight.

In a statement released on Monday, the aviation regulatory body warned that appropriate sanctions would be imposed based on the findings of their investigation into the November 18 incident.

Violent Confrontation Captured on Video

A viral video circulating online shows the two men exchanging blows inside the aircraft cabin while fellow passengers attempted to intervene and separate them. The altercation created panic and disrupted the flight's normal operations.

NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu emphasized that the Authority would conduct a thorough investigation in strict compliance with established aviation regulations and safety protocols.

"First, aviation security must deplane and detain the passengers for questioning. After this, decisions about prosecution or other measures are made. Action is not instant," Achimugu explained regarding the standard procedure following such incidents.

Immediate Consequences and Ongoing Review

The NCAA spokesperson confirmed that both individuals were removed from the aircraft in Asaba and taken to an interrogation room for questioning by security personnel.

Achimugu noted that airlines maintain the authority to implement immediate measures against unruly passengers, including placement on no-fly lists that would prevent them from traveling with that carrier in the future.

"I have confirmed that they were deplaned and taken to the interrogation room. The airline is currently reviewing the situation in management meetings," he added, indicating the airline involved is conducting its own internal assessment.

Comprehensive Investigation Scope

The NCAA investigation will extend beyond examining the behavior of the two social media personalities to include evaluating the response of aviation security personnel and staff.

"We are examining how quickly security responded, the actions of the pilot, and the conduct of staff on duty," Achimugu stated, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the probe.

While the NCAA lacks direct prosecution powers, the authority can recommend sanctions to airlines and law enforcement agencies including the Attorney General of the Federation and the Inspector General of Police.

"The behavior of both individuals endangered passengers, crew, and the aircraft itself. There is no tolerance for such conduct, especially from public figures that influence millions," Achimugu emphasized, underscoring the seriousness with which the authority views the incident.

The NCAA has committed to releasing further details once their investigation concludes, with potential consequences ranging from fines to travel restrictions for both individuals involved.
