Dangote Sugar Refinery Issues Strict Final Warning to Staff Over Chewing Company Sugar Cane in Adamawa

Dangote Sugar Refinery has taken a firm stance by issuing a final warning to its staff at the Numan operations in Adamawa State, explicitly prohibiting the chewing of company sugar cane on factory premises. The company has emphasized that this practice constitutes gross misconduct and will result in severe disciplinary measures, including potential arrest and prosecution for offenders.

Internal Circular Details the Prohibition

In an internal circular dated April 7, 2026, and signed by the head of human resources, Ikechukwu Okorie, the company outlined the reasons behind this directive. The memo, addressed to all employees, stated that sugar cane is considered company property with significant value attached to it. It highlighted that indiscriminate chewing and the resulting littering of chaffs degrade the work environment and undermine housekeeping standards, which are critical in a food processing facility like the Numan operation.

The circular stressed that as part of the food industry, the Numan site requires excellent housekeeping, and littering with chewed cane chaffs is strictly not permitted. To enforce this, security personnel have been placed on high alert and directed to arrest any staff found violating the rule. Offenders will face disciplinary action and possible prosecution to recover any losses incurred by the company.

Social Media Reactions and Company Context

The directive has gained widespread attention on social media since Tuesday, sparking various reactions from users. This move comes as Dangote Sugar advances its expansion plans under the backward integration programme, aimed at boosting domestic sugar production through large-scale cultivation and processing at sites like Numan.

Recently, Dangote Sugar announced a proposed 500 billion naira rights issue intended to reduce debt, strengthen its balance sheet, and fund projects, including upgrades at the Numan facility and new developments in Nasarawa and Taraba states. This proposal is expected to be discussed at the company's upcoming annual general meeting. Despite the circulation of the memo, no official comment has been issued by the company regarding the matter.

The circular concluded with a stark warning: BE WARNED FOR THE LAST TIME!!!, underscoring the seriousness with which the company views this issue and its commitment to maintaining operational integrity and property value.
