Tonya Lawani, a seasoned Nigerian investment banker, has been appointed as a non-executive board member of Iron Capital Asset Management, the company confirmed in a statement released on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The appointment takes immediate effect, according to the firm.
Background and Career Highlights of Tonya Lawani
Lawani brings over two decades of experience in investment banking, asset management, and corporate finance to the board. She previously served as a managing director at Stanbic IBTC Bank, where she led the investment banking division for several years. Her career also includes senior roles at Renaissance Capital and FBN Capital, focusing on capital raising, mergers and acquisitions, and structured finance across West Africa.
Iron Capital Asset Management, a Lagos-based investment firm, noted that Lawani's appointment aligns with its strategy to strengthen governance and expand its advisory capabilities. The firm manages assets in equities, fixed income, and alternative investments for institutional and high-net-worth clients.
Strategic Significance of the Appointment
In the announcement, Iron Capital's chairman, Mr. Adebayo Ogunlesi, stated: "Tonya’s deep understanding of the Nigerian capital markets and her track record in executing complex transactions will be invaluable as we continue to grow our asset management and advisory services. We are delighted to welcome her to the board."
Lawani herself commented on the appointment, saying: "I am honored to join Iron Capital at a time when the firm is poised for significant expansion. I look forward to contributing to its strategic direction and helping clients navigate the evolving investment landscape in Nigeria."
Impact on Iron Capital's Operations
Industry analysts view the appointment as a move to bolster Iron Capital's credibility and expertise in the competitive Nigerian asset management sector, which has seen increased regulatory scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in recent years. The firm has been actively diversifying its portfolio, with a particular focus on infrastructure and technology investments.
Lawani's addition brings the board to seven members, including three independent non-executive directors. The company plans to leverage her network and experience to attract new institutional mandates and enhance its corporate governance framework, according to the statement.
