Wale Edun Pens Emotional Tribute to President Tinubu, Highlights Economic Gains After Reforms

Former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has expressed his profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian people for the opportunity to serve in the current administration. In a heartfelt statement, Edun described it as an honor to contribute to Nigeria's economic reforms during a pivotal moment in the nation's journey.

A Journey of Service and Economic Contribution

Edun reflected on his various roles within the administration, stating: "I wish to thank His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for the opportunity to serve our country from the outset of his administration in May 2023; first as head of the Presidential Transition Committee, then in my role as Special Adviser on Monetary Policy, before I was appointed Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy."

He emphasized that serving during this critical period allowed him to contribute significantly to implementing the administration's economic agenda, which he described as transformative for Nigeria's future development.

Significant Economic Progress Amid Challenges

Edun noted that the administration inherited difficult economic circumstances but made substantial progress through coordinated reforms. He highlighted key achievements that demonstrate the effectiveness of their economic policies:

  • Economic growth improving from approximately 2% to over 4%
  • Inflation dropping significantly from 35% to 15%

"Mr President assumed office with our country facing difficult economic circumstances. Under his leadership, we have worked collectively across government to advance critical reforms that stabilised the macroeconomic environment, strengthened fiscal sustainability, and laid the foundation for inclusive and long-term growth," Edun explained.

Drivers of Economic Success

The former minister credited these positive outcomes to several key factors that emerged during the administration's tenure:

  1. Improved fiscal coordination across government agencies
  2. Increased investor confidence in Nigeria's economic prospects
  3. Efforts to stabilize the macroeconomic environment
  4. A shared commitment to restoring public trust in economic management

"These outcomes were driven by a shared commitment to restoring public trust and enabling faster and inclusive growth through greater investor confidence and improved economic coordination," Edun stated.

Acknowledging Collaborative Efforts

Edun extended his appreciation to numerous stakeholders who contributed to the reform process, expressing pride in their collective achievements:

"I am proud of what we achieved alongside colleagues in the Federal Executive Council, State Governors, our partners in the public and private sectors, and the many dedicated professionals whose work continues to support the nation's economic transformation."

He specifically thanked domestic and international stakeholders for their collaboration, engagement, and support throughout his period of service, recognizing that economic reform represents a continuous process requiring sustained effort.

Optimism for Nigeria's Economic Future

While acknowledging that challenges remain in Nigeria's economic landscape, Edun expressed confidence that the foundation for long-term growth has been firmly established. He emphasized that the direction forward is clear and the necessary groundwork has been laid for continued progress.

"While much remains to be done, the direction is clear, and the foundations are firmly in place. I remain optimistic about Nigeria's trajectory," he affirmed.

Transition and Continued Commitment

Edun wished his successor well as President Tinubu approved a minor cabinet reshuffle affecting the Federal Executive Council membership. Wale Edun has been replaced by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, while Mr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma (PhD) has been named ministerial nominee and Minister-designate for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
