TUC Demands Immediate Reduction in Fuel Pump Prices Amid Economic Strain

The Trade Union Congress has issued a strong call to the Federal Government, demanding an urgent slash in petroleum pump prices to alleviate the severe economic hardship faced by Nigerian workers. TUC President Festus Osifo made this appeal during a news conference held in Abuja, highlighting how the rising costs are crippling the purchasing power of citizens.

Congress Warns of Potential N2,000 Per Litre Fuel Price

Osifo issued a stark warning, stating that the price of Premium Motor Spirit could skyrocket to as high as N2,000 per litre if immediate measures are not implemented. He attributed the persistent increase in petrol prices to global crude oil price volatility and ongoing exchange rate challenges, which have exacerbated the financial struggles of workers across the nation.

The TUC specifically urged the government to utilize excess crude oil revenue to subsidize local refineries, proposing this as a strategic method to cushion the impact of escalating fuel costs on the populace. This move, according to the Congress, is critical to ameliorating the pains experienced by Nigerians.

Middle East Conflict Drives Fuel Costs to Over N1,500

The rising cost of petroleum products, particularly Premium Motor Spirit commonly known as petrol, has been directly linked to the ongoing war in the Middle East involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran. This conflict has contributed to fuel prices soaring to over N1,300 per litre, with reports indicating costs as high as N1,500 in certain regions of the country.

This surge has led to increased transportation expenses and a subsequent rise in the prices of essential commodities, further straining household budgets and economic stability.

TUC Calls for Enhanced Security and Government Accountability

In addition to economic demands, the Trade Union Congress emphasized the government's responsibility to ensure national security. The Congress called for an end to the indiscriminate killing of citizens by suspected terrorists across Nigeria, stressing that security is a fundamental duty that must be upheld to protect the welfare of the people.

The TUC insists that an immediate reduction in pump prices is not just an economic necessity but a vital step towards restoring confidence and alleviating the widespread suffering caused by the current fuel crisis.
