Wale Edun Pens Emotional Tribute to Tinubu, Highlights Economic Gains After Reforms

Former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has expressed his profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians for the opportunity to serve in the current administration. In a heartfelt statement, Edun described it as an honor to contribute to Nigeria's economic reforms during a pivotal moment in the nation's journey.

Edun's Journey and Contributions

Edun served in multiple key roles from the outset of Tinubu's administration in May 2023. He began as head of the Presidential Transition Committee, then took on the role of Special Adviser on Monetary Policy, before being appointed as Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. He emphasized that working across these positions allowed him to help implement the administration's economic agenda effectively.

"I wish to thank His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for the opportunity to serve our country from the outset of his administration," Edun stated. Economic Achievements Under Reforms

Edun noted that the administration inherited a difficult economic situation but made significant progress through coordinated reforms. He highlighted key achievements that demonstrate tangible improvements in Nigeria's economic landscape.

  • Economic Growth: Improved from approximately 2% to over 4%.
  • Inflation Rate: Dropped significantly from 35% to 15%.

These outcomes were attributed to enhanced fiscal coordination, increased investor confidence, and concerted efforts to stabilize the macroeconomic environment. Edun explained that the reforms focused on restoring public trust and enabling faster, inclusive growth through greater economic coordination.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Outlook

Edun commended the collective work of various stakeholders, including colleagues in the Federal Executive Council, state governors, public and private sector partners, and dedicated professionals. He acknowledged that while challenges remain, the foundation for long-term growth has been firmly established.

"Mr President assumed office with our country facing difficult economic circumstances. Under his leadership, we have worked collectively across government to advance critical reforms that stabilized the macroeconomic environment, strengthened fiscal sustainability, and laid the foundation for inclusive and long-term growth," Edun said.

He expressed optimism about Nigeria's economic trajectory, stating that the direction is clear and the foundations are in place. Edun also wished his successor well and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the administration and national development.

Cabinet Reshuffle and Successor

In related developments, President Tinubu recently approved a minor cabinet reshuffle affecting the Federal Executive Council. Wale Edun has been replaced by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, while Mr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma (PhD) has been named ministerial nominee and Minister-designate for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Edun concluded his statement by thanking all stakeholders, both domestic and international, for their collaboration and support. "The work of economic reform is, by its nature, a continuous process; I remain optimistic about Nigeria's trajectory. I wish my successor and the entire government the very best as they continue the work of improving the lives of Nigerians," he said.
