Governor Sanwo-Olu Commissions Pioneering Sustainable Tower in Lagos Free Zone

The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has officially inaugurated Irele Tower, marking a significant milestone as the first commercial building within the Lagos Free Zone. This nine-storey, EDGE-certified development establishes a new benchmark for sustainable workspace in Lekki, Nigeria's most rapidly expanding economic corridor.

Sustainable Design and Environmental Efficiency

Irele Tower represents a groundbreaking achievement in eco-friendly construction, designed specifically for office and retail activities within the Lekki economic corridor. As an EDGE-certified "green building," the structure demonstrates remarkable efficiency with 26% reduced energy consumption and 46% lower water usage compared to conventional buildings. The architectural design draws inspiration from maritime elements, reflecting the tower's strategic proximity to the Lekki Deep Sea Port.

The EDGE certification program, an innovation of IFC (a member of the World Bank Group), enables emerging markets to implement resource-efficient building practices quickly, affordably, and effectively. This certification underscores the commitment to sustainable development principles that balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.

Strategic Importance for Lagos Development

During the inauguration ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the delivery of Irele Tower represents a crucial advancement in developing the economic zone, aligning perfectly with his administration's THEMES agenda. This comprehensive strategy aims to transform Lagos into a 21st-century economy by accelerating economic growth to support the state's broader developmental objectives.

The governor highlighted that developments like Irele Tower are essential for unlocking the full potential of the Ibeju-Lekki axis within the economic zone. This significance is amplified by the presence of the Lekki Deep Sea Port and numerous other major industrial investments concentrated within the Lagos Free Zone.

"The commissioning of Irele Tower clearly demonstrates what can be accomplished through robust collaboration between public and private sectors," Governor Sanwo-Olu stated. "This development not only enhances the infrastructure profile of the Lagos Free Zone but also strengthens our vision of establishing Lagos as a premier destination for investment and economic activities across Africa."

The governor reaffirmed the state government's commitment to continuing partnerships with private sector stakeholders to drive sustainable urban development, generate employment opportunities, and position Lagos as a leading hub for commerce and industry throughout the continent.

Creating an Integrated Business Ecosystem

Adesuwa Ladoja, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lagos Free Zone, emphasized that Irele Tower reflects the zone's dedication to creating an integrated ecosystem where businesses can flourish. This environment is supported by modern infrastructure, strategic geographical positioning, and efficient logistics networks.

Ladoja explained that the building was specifically conceptualized to address the growing demand for high-quality commercial spaces within the zone. This demand has intensified as investor interest continues to surge following the operationalization of key projects throughout the Lekki axis.

"The commissioning of Irele Tower represents a defining milestone in our journey to build a world-class industrial and commercial hub," Ladoja added. "This development reflects our commitment to providing high-quality infrastructure that supports ease of doing business and enhances operational efficiency for our tenants. As the first commercial tower within the Lagos Free Zone, Irele Tower establishes a new benchmark for quality workspace in this corridor and reinforces our position as a preferred destination for investment and enterprise."
