Agge Deep Seaport: FG Targets Jobs, Investment in Niger Delta

The Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to the realization of the Agge Deep Sea Port in Bayelsa State, describing the initiative as a transformative maritime project that will unlock investment prospects, generate thousands of employment opportunities, and accelerate economic growth in the Niger Delta.

Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, made this commitment in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday. He emphasized that the proposed deep sea port remains a top priority under the Federal Government's strategy to expand Nigeria's maritime infrastructure and deepen the blue economy.

According to the minister, the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu's economic transformation agenda, which aims to boost trade, industrialization, and sustainable development throughout the country. Oyetola stated that upon completion, the Agge Deep Sea Port will serve as a major maritime gateway in the South-South region, enhancing Nigeria's competitiveness in regional and international trade while alleviating pressure on existing ports.

The minister disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is collaborating closely with the Bayelsa State Government and other stakeholders to expedite the project's implementation. He noted that beyond improving maritime capacity, the port will stimulate economic activities across multiple sectors, including logistics, fisheries, shipbuilding, maritime services, and tourism.

Oyetola further stated that the project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities while attracting both local and foreign investors to the region. “The Agge Deep Sea Port will not only enhance Nigeria’s maritime capacity but also create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities. It will stimulate local and foreign investment, accelerate economic development in the Niger Delta, and strengthen the nation’s position as a maritime hub in West Africa,” he added.

The minister also commended Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, for his support of the project and for aligning the state's development plans with the Federal Government's Marine and Blue Economy agenda. Reiterating the government's resolve to deliver the project, Oyetola described the Agge Deep Sea Port as a catalyst for regional transformation and a cornerstone of Nigeria's maritime future.

The project is widely regarded as one of the strategic infrastructure initiatives expected to drive the growth of Nigeria's emerging blue economy and expand the country's role in global maritime trade.
