AMATO Warns Truckers on PEBEC Lagos Port Cleanup

The Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) has issued a directive to its members demanding strict adherence to the approved single-lane traffic arrangement and a halt to indiscriminate parking along the Lagos ports corridor. This instruction comes in anticipation of the upcoming cleanup exercise organized by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC).

Directives for Truck Drivers

AMATO also instructed truck drivers to remove all broken-down vehicles obstructing port access roads and to maintain orderly conduct throughout the duration of the operation. The association emphasized the importance of cooperation to ensure the success of the initiative.

PEBEC Cleanup Operation Details

PEBEC is scheduled to conduct a two-day cleanup and enforcement operation along the Lagos Port Corridor on May 14 and 15, 2026. The primary objective is to address congestion and traffic bottlenecks on the access roads leading to the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports.

This development follows the gradual return of trucks and traders to the Apapa port corridor, as well as numerous complaints from truckers about hardships caused by incessant extortion by unauthorized personnel and other exploitative practices within the port areas.

Key Issues to Be Addressed

In a statement signed by AMATO Secretary General Mohammed Sani Bala, the association outlined the specific challenges the exercise aims to tackle. These include persistent traffic congestion, extortion of truckers, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and unauthorized checkpoints. Additional concerns are indiscriminate parking and other uncoordinated activities along the port corridors, which continue to hinder cargo movement and increase logistics costs.

“Members are advised to cooperate fully with enforcement agencies in order to avoid sanctions and heavy penalties. To be forewarned is to be forearmed,” the statement read.
