The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has issued a strong warning to commuters and boat operators, urging them to prioritize safety while traveling across the state's inland waterways, especially during the ongoing rainy season and the Eid-el-Adha celebrations.
LASWA's Safety Advisory
In a statement felicitating with Muslim faithful in Lagos, LASWA strongly advised passengers to avoid night travel on the waterways due to reduced visibility and weather-related risks that could compromise safe navigation. The authority emphasized the importance of planning trips during daylight hours and remaining vigilant at all times.
“Plan your trips during daylight hours and remain vigilant at all times. Navigate with utmost caution, follow all operational safety guidelines, do not exceed the speed limit, and check weather conditions before every trip. Never compromise safety, as it is a shared responsibility,” the authority stated.
Mandatory Life Jacket Use
LASWA also mandated that all passengers and crew wear life jackets throughout every journey, as required by regulations. This measure aims to reduce the risk of drowning in case of accidents.
The Special Adviser on Blue Economy to the Governor of Lagos, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, reaffirmed LASWA's commitment to ensuring safer, secure, and efficient waterways transportation across Lagos State. “LASWA wishes all residents a peaceful and safe Eid al-Adha. Please celebrate responsibly and follow safety-first practices on the waterways,” he said.
He urged waterways users and operators to contact the authority for any information regarding safety in the state.
