Nigeria Seeks EU Partnership to Combat Illegal Fishing and Maritime Crimes
The Federal Government of Nigeria has made a strong appeal for deeper collaboration with the European Union to address emerging maritime threats, with a particular focus on illegal fishing, trafficking, and environmental crimes in the Gulf of Guinea. This call was emphasized during a high-level meeting in Abuja, underscoring the urgency of a coordinated international response to safeguard regional waters.
Minister Oyetola Highlights Evolving Security Challenges
Speaking yesterday in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the European Union Evaluation Mission on the Gulf of Guinea Inter-regional Network (GoGIN II) Project, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, stressed that evolving security challenges in the region require a broader, more integrated, and sustained response anchored on strong international partnerships. He pointed out that illegal activities not only threaten marine resources but also undermine economic stability and environmental sustainability.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the Minister, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, noted that the delegation, led by Ms. Stéphanie Vergniault, was in Nigeria as part of an independent assessment of the EU-funded initiative, which supports maritime coordination and information sharing across the Gulf of Guinea. Oyetola reiterated Nigeria's firm commitment to the Yaoundé Architecture for Maritime Security, describing it as a vital platform for regional cooperation, collective response, and intelligence exchange.
Digital Economy Minister Emphasizes Youth and Technology
In a related development, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, highlighted the importance of harnessing Nigeria's growing youth population to remain competitive in an increasingly technology-driven global economy. He stressed that beyond access to technology, countries must build the capacity to effectively adopt and utilize digital innovations to drive economic growth and national development.
He made these remarks yesterday at the 3MTT Partner Network Launch & Showcase, organized by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) to formally introduce the 3MTT Partner Network and mark the commencement of the EU–3MTT partnership in Lagos. The event showcased Nigeria's efforts to bolster its digital sector through strategic alliances.
EU Delegation Reaffirms Support for Nigeria
The Head of Cooperation, EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Massimo De Luca, affirmed that the European Union remains strongly invested in developing Nigeria's digital sector through sustained partnerships and policy-driven initiatives. This commitment extends to maritime security, with the EU continuing to support projects like GoGIN II to enhance regional stability and economic prospects.
