Esso Celebrates Two Decades of Erha Field Oil Production Milestone
Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (EEPNL) has officially marked the 20th anniversary of oil production from the Erha Field, located within Oil Mining Lease (OML) 133. The landmark production operations commenced on March 27, 2006, and since that pivotal date, the field has achieved remarkable output, surpassing 800 million barrels of crude oil. This extensive production has facilitated the delivery of more than 850 crude cargoes, significantly bolstering Nigeria's petroleum sector.
Substantial Economic Contributions and National Impact
In commemorating this significant anniversary, the company highlighted the Erha Field's profound contributions to Nigeria's economy. Over the past two decades, the field has played a crucial role in supporting the nation's overall oil output, enhancing foreign exchange earnings, and generating substantial employment opportunities. Financially, the project has generated over $1 billion in royalties, more than $22 billion in taxes, and approximately $300 million in various levies, underscoring its vital role in national revenue streams.
Historical Development and Collaborative Partnerships
According to an official statement released by the company, the development of the Erha Field followed the award of OML 133 to EEPNL and its partners in 1993. This ambitious project was executed in close collaboration with the Nigerian Government, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO). This tripartite partnership has been fundamental to the field's sustained success and operational excellence.

The company also highlighted that the Erha development ranks among the most advanced projects of its era, incorporating cutting-edge technologies. These include some of Nigeria's deepest subsea wells and the nation's first fully domestically built deepwater crude oil offloading buoy. Production activities are efficiently managed through a large Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, showcasing sophisticated maritime engineering and operational prowess.
