NUPRC: Nigeria on Track to Hit 3 Million bpd Oil Target by 2030

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has stated that Nigeria is on course to achieve its target of producing 3 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) by 2030. This announcement comes amid efforts to boost the country's oil output and attract new investments in the sector.

Current Production and Projections

Nigeria currently produces around 1.4 million bpd, including condensates. The NUPRC Chief Executive, Gbenga Komolafe, noted that the country's production has been hampered by challenges such as oil theft, vandalism, and underinvestment. However, he expressed confidence that with ongoing reforms and improved security, the target is achievable.

According to Komolafe, the commission has put in place measures to enhance production, including the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the introduction of fiscal incentives for investors. He stated that these steps have already started to yield results, with production gradually increasing from previous lows.

Investments and Security Improvements

The NUPRC highlighted that several international oil companies (IOCs) have expressed interest in expanding their operations in Nigeria. The commission is working to create a more favorable business environment to attract these investments. Additionally, efforts to curb oil theft and pipeline vandalism have been intensified, with collaboration between security agencies and local communities.

Komolafe said, "We are very optimistic that with the ongoing reforms and the commitment of all stakeholders, Nigeria will meet its 3 million bpd target by 2030. The PIA provides a solid legal framework, and we are seeing increased interest from investors."

Challenges and Way Forward

Despite the positive outlook, challenges remain. The NUPRC acknowledged that achieving the target requires sustained efforts in security, infrastructure development, and regulatory efficiency. The commission is also focusing on deepwater and frontier basins to unlock new reserves.

Industry analysts have noted that Nigeria's oil production has been volatile due to operational issues and global market dynamics. However, the NUPRC's commitment to transparency and efficiency is expected to build investor confidence. The commission aims to increase production to 2 million bpd by 2027 as an intermediate milestone.

Impact on Nigeria's Economy

Increasing oil production to 3 million bpd would significantly boost Nigeria's revenue and foreign exchange earnings. The oil sector remains a critical part of the economy, accounting for a large share of government income and export earnings. Achieving this target would also create jobs and stimulate growth in related industries.

The NUPRC's announcement comes at a time when global oil demand is projected to remain strong, providing a favorable market for Nigeria's crude. However, the country must also navigate the global energy transition and diversify its economy to reduce dependence on oil.
