A Nigerian woman, Adeife Adeoye, has sparked widespread discussion on social media after posting a video detailing her challenging house-hunting experience in Lagos State. Following a quit notice from her landlord, who sold the property, Adeife and her companion Lawrence began searching for a new home in the upscale Magodo Phase 2 area. However, the first apartment they inspected left her deeply disappointed.
Expensive Apartment With Major Flaws
The three-bedroom apartment had an annual rent of N6.5 million, yet its ceiling was covered in dark mold stains from apparent water damage. Despite Lawrence's attempt to downplay the issues, Adeife strongly disagreed. She pointed out that the kitchen was too small and the mold made the house unlivable. In the TikTok video, she stated, 'I really did not like it, it has mold. Lawrence loved it, please stop trying to say Lawrence loved it. Number one the house is 6.5 million Naira. The house has mold, the kitchen is not that big. I didn't like it.'
Second Property Also Out of Reach
The duo also inspected a cleaner three-bedroom duplex priced at N8 million. Although Adeife liked the space, she lamented that hidden fees for agency, legal, and caution pushed the total to N11.9 million. She expressed frustration over how Nigerian house agents inflate costs, making accommodation unaffordable for many citizens.
Social Media Reactions
The video garnered mixed reactions. A user named WARRI UNISEX CLOTHING VENDOR commented, '8m,12m n I Dey find house of total package 550k.' Onyi’s Memoirs noted, 'There is mold!!! There is no potential!! No matter what you do it will come back and it can affect your health.' Another user, Am just a gal, said, 'If you have such money why not build something small.'
This incident highlights the growing housing challenges in Lagos, where high rents and hidden costs often deter tenants.
