Lagos State Grants Taxpayers Additional Two Weeks for Annual Filing
The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service has officially announced an extension for the submission of individual annual income tax returns, providing residents with a crucial grace period. The original deadline of March 31 has been postponed to April 14, 2026, offering taxpayers extra time to ensure their filings are complete and accurate.
Extension Aims to Reduce Errors and Support Compliance
According to Ayodele Subair, the Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, this decision was made to assist individuals who require more time to gather necessary documentation and information. The extension is specifically designed to minimize errors during the submission process, which can lead to complications or penalties later on.
Despite the extended deadline, authorities are urging residents not to procrastinate. Taxpayers are encouraged to utilize the additional days wisely to fulfill their obligations promptly and avoid last-minute rushes that could overwhelm the system.
Mandatory Electronic Filing System Now in Effect
The tax authority has also reinforced that manual filing of tax returns is no longer acceptable. All submissions must now be made exclusively through the agency's electronic filing platform. This online system was developed to enhance transparency, speed, and accessibility, allowing taxpayers to complete their returns at any time from any location.
Residents are advised to ensure that all personal details, including their Tax Identification Number, are accurately provided during the electronic submission process to prevent delays or rejections.
Who Must File and Why It Matters
Under Nigerian tax regulations, all individuals earning income within Lagos State are required to file annual tax returns with the state government. This obligation applies to both salaried employees under the Pay-As-You-Earn system and self-employed individuals, including business owners, freelancers, and professionals.
For PAYE workers, filing tax returns serves to verify the taxes deducted by their employers and enables them to obtain tax clearance certificates when needed. Self-employed persons must declare their income through this annual process to remain compliant with state laws.
Importance of Tax Clearance Certificates
Tax clearance certificates, obtained through proper filing, are essential documents for various official and financial activities. They are often required for business transactions, government contract applications, and accessing certain financial services. The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service emphasizes that the deadline extension does not eliminate the legal requirement to file returns.
Authorities have warned that penalties may be imposed on individuals who fail to comply by the new April 14 deadline. Therefore, residents are strongly encouraged to complete their filings early to avoid potential fines and ensure smooth processing.
