Lagos State Extends Tax Filing Deadline to April 21 Amid eTax Platform Surge

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has announced a further extension of the deadline for filing individual annual income tax returns, now set for April 21, 2026. This decision follows a significant surge in activity on the agency's eTax platform after a previous extension to April 14, indicating heightened compliance efforts among taxpayers.

Reasons for the Extension

According to LIRS, the extension is aimed at providing taxpayers with adequate time to complete their submissions without disruption, given the heavy traffic on the eTax platform. The agency emphasized that this spike in activity reflects increased efforts by individuals to meet their tax obligations, prompting the need for additional time to ensure accurate and complete filings.

In a statement, LIRS noted, "In view of this development, and to ensure that all taxpayers are provided with adequate opportunity to successfully complete their filings, LIRS hereby announces a further extension of the deadline, now set for April 21, 2026."

Multiple Extensions and Compliance Efforts

This marks the latest in a series of deadline extensions. Initially, the statutory deadline for employers in Lagos State to file annual tax returns for the 2025 financial year was January 31, 2026. It was later shifted to March 31 and then to April 14, aimed at accommodating taxpayers and addressing concerns about compliance and last-minute rushes.

Executive Chairman Ayodele Subair reiterated that all submissions must be made electronically through the official LIRS eTax portal, which remains the sole approved channel. He described this new deadline as a final extension, granted to ease the filing process while ensuring accuracy and adherence to legal requirements.

Taxpayer Guidance and Warnings

Tax authorities have urged taxpayers to take full advantage of this additional window, warning that failing to report all income sources or missing the deadline could result in penalties or fines. They recommend submitting returns early to avoid last-minute challenges and allow time to resolve any issues during the process.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service has also extended its deadline for filing individual annual income tax returns by one month, from March 31 to April 30, 2026, highlighting a broader trend of accommodating taxpayer needs.

Background on the eTax Platform

The eTax platform has seen increased usage as more taxpayers transition to digital submissions, reflecting a push towards modernizing tax administration in Nigeria. This extension underscores LIRS's commitment to facilitating compliance while managing the technical demands of a high-traffic online system.
