LIRS Announces Final Tax Filing Extension to April 21, 2026
The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service has officially extended the deadline for filing individual annual income tax returns to April 21, 2026. This decision comes as a response to a significant surge in traffic on the agency's electronic filing platform, which has been overwhelmed by taxpayers rushing to meet the previous deadline of April 14.
Increased Platform Traffic Prompts Extension
In a statement released by Monsurat Amasa-Oyelude, Head of Corporate Communications at LIRS, the agency explained that the extension was necessary due to the increased activity on its eTax platform. The statement highlighted that many taxpayers were attempting to file their returns at the last minute, leading to potential disruptions and delays. The additional time is intended to allow residents to complete their filings accurately and without interruption, ensuring that all submissions meet the required standards.
The tax authority emphasized that this new deadline represents a final extension and urged all eligible individuals in Lagos State to take advantage of this window to fulfill their statutory obligations. LIRS reiterated that filing annual tax returns is a mandatory requirement under state law, and failure to comply could result in penalties or legal consequences.
Electronic Filing Mandatory Through eTax Platform
LIRS has made it clear that all tax returns must be submitted electronically via its eTax platform, which is the only approved channel for such filings. This move aligns with the agency's efforts to streamline processes and enhance efficiency in tax collection. The initial deadline was set for March 31, 2026, but was previously extended to April 14 before this latest adjustment to April 21.
The agency's proactive approach aims to accommodate taxpayers while maintaining the integrity of the filing system. Residents are encouraged to act promptly to avoid any last-minute issues and ensure their compliance with Lagos State tax regulations.
