Airtel Achieves Global Milestone with 650 Million Subscribers, Strengthens Nigerian Infrastructure
Bharti Airtel has reached a significant global milestone, surpassing 650 million mobile subscribers worldwide. This achievement positions the company as the second-largest telecommunications operator globally by customer base, reflecting its extensive network scale and ability to deliver consistent quality across diverse markets through sustained innovation.
Rapid Infrastructure Expansion in Nigeria
In Nigeria, Airtel has accelerated its infrastructure development at an unprecedented rate over the past three years. The company increased its national site count from just above 13,000 to nearly 17,200 sites, including more than 1,560 sites added in the last twelve months. This expansion enhances capacity in high-demand areas and extends high-speed coverage to previously underserved regions, supporting Nigeria's growing digital economy.
Significant Contribution to National Infrastructure
According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), as of December 2025, Nigeria recorded 145,141 base stations across 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G layers. Airtel accounts for 46,918 of these base-station layers, demonstrating its substantial role in the country's radio access network and its efforts to meet rising data consumption demands. Nearly 99 percent of Airtel's Nigerian sites are now 4G-enabled, providing a near-ubiquitous high-speed broadband footprint.
Enhancing Internet Penetration and Connectivity
The network upgrades have contributed to Nigeria's internet penetration climbing above 50 percent, with Airtel recording among the largest monthly increases in new internet subscribers. Thousands of sites have been upgraded for capacity in the past year alone, improving speeds and stability during peak usage. Additionally, Airtel is addressing infrastructure challenges by advancing plans for a second submarine cable Internet breakout point at Kwa Ibo in Akwa Ibom State, part of the 2Africa cable system rollout, to ensure faster and more resilient national connectivity.
Growth in Digital Finance and Retail Distribution
Airtel's digital finance arm, SmartCash, has gained traction in Nigeria's competitive mobile money ecosystem, now serving over three million active users. Supported by an expansive agent network and digital services, it lowers barriers for financial transactions and savings. The company's retail distribution network includes approximately 4,000 exclusive outlets, bringing services closer to customers in small towns, communities, and urban hubs, driving access and engagement in the market.
Commitment to Future Innovation
Airtel remains committed to sustained innovation in Nigeria's evolving digital economy. This includes expanded fibre backbones, advanced mobile broadband, and future-ready services such as satellite-enabled solutions and enterprise-grade digital platforms. These efforts aim to foster connectivity, commerce, and creativity across Nigeria and beyond, ensuring a stable digital experience for consumers and enterprises alike.
