Airtel Nigeria has launched an innovative smartphone financing programme aimed at accelerating 4G adoption across the country. The initiative, unveiled in Lagos, targets millions of Nigerians still using outdated 2G and 3G devices, providing them with affordable access to modern 4G technology.
Affordable 4G Access for Underserved Communities
The programme kicks off with the Itel A50, a budget-friendly 4G-enabled smartphone designed to deliver faster speeds and smoother browsing experiences. According to company officials, this strategic move addresses the significant barrier of device affordability that has prevented many Nigerians from joining the 4G ecosystem.
Eligible customers can acquire the new smartphone by making an initial payment of either ₦19,000 or ₦21,000, depending on their credit assessment. The remaining balance will be settled through convenient weekly installments, making modern technology accessible to low-income earners.
Streamlined Payment Process Through SmartCash
Airtel has integrated its mobile money platform, SmartCash, to handle all transactions securely. This approach not only simplifies the payment process but also promotes financial inclusion by encouraging more Nigerians to adopt digital financial services.
Dinesh Balsingh, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Nigeria, emphasized that the initiative reflects the company's commitment to narrowing the digital divide. He noted that reliable connectivity opens doors to educational opportunities, business growth, entertainment, and social engagement.
Eligibility Requirements and Credit Assessment
To qualify for the financing scheme, applicants must meet specific criteria:
- Active Airtel subscription for at least three months
- Positive credit assessment through intelligent scoring technology
- Regular usage patterns and consistent payment behavior
The credit evaluation system was developed in partnership with Intelligra, a device financing company that analyzes customer spending habits and payment history to ensure responsible lending practices.
Ismail Adeshina, Marketing Director at Airtel Nigeria, described the programme as a crucial step toward democratizing technology access. He stressed that ordinary Nigerians should not be excluded from digital advancements due to financial constraints.
This initiative comes at a time when Nigeria's data consumption is rapidly increasing, highlighting the urgent need for expanded 4G infrastructure and device accessibility. Airtel's financing scheme represents a significant push toward creating a more digitally inclusive society where economic status doesn't determine technological access.
