In a move to uphold tradition, a leading contender for the vacant throne of the Awujale of Ijebuland has publicly appealed to his supporters and the general public to refrain from addressing him as the king.
A Respectful Appeal to Supporters
Omooba Abimbola Onabanjo of the Fusengbuwa Royal House issued this appeal on Saturday, 10 January 2026. He made his position clear through a press release, expressing deep gratitude for the widespread support he has received while firmly stating the need to respect established customs.
The 45-year-old prince thanked everyone for their goodwill and prayers, stating he felt "overwhelming" love. However, he was quick to redirect the enthusiasm, emphasising that the selection process is a sacred matter that must follow its due course without premature conclusions.
Upholding the Sanctity of Tradition
Onabanjo directly referenced the Yoruba saying, ‘ilufẹ́mil’óyè’, which means "it is the town that bestows the crown." He stated that his appeal was made in the interest of preserving the sanctity, dignity, and integrity of Ijebu tradition.
"I humbly appeal to supporters, well-wishers, and members of the public to kindly refrain from referring to me as the Awujale or circulating materials that suggest a conclusion has already been reached," he said in his statement. He reiterated his commitment to the unity and heritage of Ijebuland and urged everyone to allow the rightful processes to unfold naturally.
Background of the Vacant Throne
The appeal comes as the throne of the Awujale remains vacant following the passing of the highly revered Oba Sikiru Adetona, who died on 13 July 2025 at the age of 91.
Prince Abimbola Onabanjo, a grandson of former Ogun State Governor, Olabisi Onabanjo, has been widely mentioned as a potential successor. His profile as a successful businessman and philanthropist has gained significant traction, fuelled by various online campaigns endorsing his candidacy.
In closing his statement, Onabanjo assured everyone of his "utmost respect for tradition, peace, and harmony within Ijebuland," signalling his priority for orderly and respectful succession above all else.
