Abia and Federal Government Collaborate to Revitalize Historical Sites and Boost Tourism
In a significant move to preserve Nigeria's historical heritage and stimulate economic growth, the Abia State Government and the Federal Government have reached an agreement to rehabilitate and upgrade two key relics from the Nigerian Civil War: the National War Museum and the Ojukwu Bunker, both located in Umuahia, the state capital. This initiative aims to transform these sites into prominent tourism centers with substantial revenue-generating potential.
Addressing Neglect and Decay
Prince Okey Kanu, the Abia State Information Commissioner, disclosed this development during a briefing on the outcomes of the weekly State Executive Council meeting. He highlighted that both the National War Museum and the Ojukwu Bunker have suffered from prolonged neglect, leading to a state of steady deterioration and dilapidation. The planned upgrades are part of a broader strategy to activate the state's tourism potential, positioning Abia as a major destination within Nigeria.
Kanu emphasized that this effort is expected to significantly boost the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and create numerous employment opportunities for residents. By investing in these historical landmarks, the government seeks to not only preserve cultural heritage but also drive sustainable economic development through tourism.
Enhancing Tourism Infrastructure
In addition to the war-related sites, the State Executive Council has approved the first phase of retrofitting the Arochukwu Waterfall at Ibom in Arochukwu Local Government Area. This project is designed to enhance the waterfall's appeal as a tourist attraction by developing essential visitor infrastructure. Key components include the construction of entrance gates, souvenir shops, a town stand, a bush bar, and convenience facilities to improve accessibility and overall visitor experience.
Kanu indicated that other tourism sites across Abia State will also receive attention through renovations and upgrades, ensuring a comprehensive approach to tourism development. The collaboration with the Federal Government, facilitated through the State Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Arts, underscores a shared commitment to revitalizing institutions like the National War Museum and Ojukwu Bunker.
Preparing Athletes for Life After Sports
Shifting focus to sports, Commissioner Kanu announced a new program introduced by Governor Alex Otti's administration to prepare athletes, sports managers, and administrators for sustainable livelihoods after retirement. The state-owned Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in Aba has launched a National Diploma Programme in Sports, with pioneer students already matriculated.
This educational initiative aims to equip graduates with relevant knowledge and skills in sports management, enabling them to lead productive lives beyond their active participation in sports. Kanu stated, "The programme will provide graduates with the expertise needed to thrive in sports-related careers, ensuring they can maintain a good quality of life post-retirement."
Boosting Sports Economy and Performance
Furthering its sports agenda, the Abia State Government is prioritizing the Abia State Special Sports Economic Zone (ASES). This project leverages the creative talents of artisans in Aba specializing in fashion, leather works, and sportswear production to establish a thriving sports merchandising hub for local, national, and African markets.
Anchored on a partnership between Sports Nigeria and the Abia State Government through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), the initiative is projected to generate substantial revenue through taxation and create massive employment opportunities for youth. Kanu noted that the state's investments in sports are already yielding positive results, as evidenced by Abia's first-place finish in the maiden South East Darts Competition and the Teqball League held at Aba Sports Club.
Teqball, an emerging sport similar to table tennis but played using the head and legs, exemplifies the government's efforts to harness the economic and developmental potential of sports. These successes reflect a deliberate strategy to enhance sports performance while driving economic growth through innovative projects.
