Gov Abiodun: Culture, Festivals Key to Nigeria's Economic Diversification
Abiodun: Culture Can Drive Nigeria's Economic Growth

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has declared that Nigeria's rich cultural heritage, when properly developed, holds the key to diversifying the nation's economy and generating significant foreign exchange earnings.

Culture as an Economic Engine

The governor made this powerful statement at the 39th Akesan Day Celebration, which took place at Christ Apostolic Church Grammar School in Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area. He pointed to numerous countries that have successfully built robust economies around culture and tourism.

According to Governor Abiodun, Nigeria is sitting on a goldmine of untapped potential through its numerous cultural festivals. He explained that events like Akesan Day bring a direct economic boost to local communities.

"Festivals like this bring thousands of visitors who patronise local businesses, artisans, entertainers, food vendors, hotels and of course, our transport operators," Abiodun stated.

Global Models and Local Potential

The governor provided clear examples of how culture drives economic expansion worldwide. He specifically mentioned communities in Brazil and Kenya, as well as the global hub of Dubai, where tourism is a major contributor to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

"When properly harnessed, cultural celebrations become platforms for tourism, like Lisabi Day, Oronna Day, Ojude Oba and many more. They create jobs and attract investments," he emphasized.

Abiodun asserted that Nigeria can achieve similar success by consistently developing and promoting its unique cultural identities. He described festivals as catalysts that generate positive visibility and draw attention to communities.

Beyond Economics: The Social Value of Culture

Beyond the economic argument, Governor Abiodun highlighted the profound social benefits of cultural preservation. He noted that culture promotes a shared identity and social harmony, while instilling crucial values like unity, honesty, and communal responsibility.

These values, he stressed, are fundamental ingredients for meaningful societal development. The governor reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to promoting culture, preserving history, and supporting community development initiatives across Ogun State.

In a nod to national leadership, Abiodun commended President Bola Tinubu for his ongoing efforts to revive the Nigerian economy through various reforms. He assured that Ogun State would continue to align its policies and programs with the Federal Government for the ultimate benefit of the people.

Echoes of Support from State Officials and Royalty

The event also featured supportive voices from other key figures. The State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbemi, described Akesan Day as a vital rallying point for cultural promotion and a platform for planning the community's future. He assured attendees of the government's dedication to preserving Ogun's cultural heritage.

Oba Babatunde Ajayi, the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, praised the people of Iperu for their dedication to sustaining their cherished traditions and congratulated the event organizers for a successful celebration.

Infrastructure and Community Development Highlighted

The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Solomon Onafowokan, the Asiwaju of Remoland, applauded the state government for its impressive infrastructural projects. He made special mention of the Gateway International Airport in Iperu, highlighting how such developments, coupled with cultural events, enhance both cultural engagement and economic progress.

Chief Onafowokan urged residents to continue preserving their heritage for future generations. The Chairman of the Iperu Akesan Community Development Association, Chief Taiwo Oyebanji, reported significant progress in the town over the past year, including road projects, physical development, and erosion control.

He called for continued unity to pursue peace and progress, while also appealing for the amicable resolution of boundary issues, improved local security, enhanced power supply, and the completion of ongoing community development projects.
