The recently concluded 2026 edition of the GTCO Food & Drink Festival has reinforced the timeless truth that food and drink remain essential for human survival, regardless of economic conditions. Amid Nigeria's dwindling economy and widespread hardship, the festival, themed 'Everything Food and Drink,' provided a much-needed respite by focusing on the universal need for sustenance.
Food as a Priority
Organized by Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), the three-day event, held from May 1 to May 3, 2026, attracted a massive crowd. The turnout underscored the reality that for most people, securing food and drink is the primary motivation for earning a living. The festival's theme highlighted that addressing hunger is the first step toward survival, making other concerns secondary.
Diverse Offerings for All
The festival catered to a wide range of food preferences and dietary choices, ensuring that everyone—young and old—found something to enjoy. This inclusivity reflected the understanding that food is a universal need that transcends cultural and economic boundaries.
Bringing People Together
Segun Agbaje, Group Chief Executive Officer of GTCO Plc, emphasized that food, in its simplest form, is a powerful force for unity. He noted, "It connects culture, tells stories, and creates moments that linger long after the experience itself." The festival served as a gathering point for people from all walks of life, fostering connection and community.
A Fusion of Food, Music, and Culture
Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to sample cuisines from diverse cultures while listening to good music. The venue featured an all-day masterclass schedule, with sessions on traditional recipes and contemporary global cuisines. Notable chefs and experts, including Dera Oluyede and Kemi Anazodo (Cinnamon Rolls and Chocolate Chips Cookies), Dylan Eitharong (Thai Curries), Begona Rodrigo (L'albufera), Paolo Griffa (Italian Cuisine), Andre Huston Mack (World of Wine), Tayi Marinyama (Dashi & Unami), Chef Arbinden Dugal (Dum Pukht Biryani), Camari Mick (Sorrel Curd Tart), Jennifer Kill Booker (Southern Brunch), Jean-Baptiste Ascione (French Cuisine), and Dominique Leach (American Soul Food & BBQ), shared their expertise.
Beyond Food: A Platform for Creativity and Enterprise
The festival also served as a launchpad for small businesses, emerging talents, and established brands. Agbaje explained that the event reflects GTCO's commitment to promoting enterprise by offering hundreds of entrepreneurs free retail platforms and access to a wider audience. This initiative helped stimulate economic activity and provided opportunities for growth in a challenging economic climate.
