Otti launches ₦1.3bn water projects in Abia

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has officially launched the rehabilitation of the Ubakala and Ariaria water schemes, a ₦1.3 billion project aimed at improving access to clean water for thousands of residents. The ceremony, held at Ubakala in Umuahia South Local Government Area, marked part of the administration's third anniversary celebrations.

Water as a top priority

Governor Otti emphasized that access to safe and potable water remains a major priority for his administration. He noted that unsafe water has caused many deaths, making this project critical for public health and economic development. The governor expressed gratitude to humanitarian organization Mercy Corps for its support, stating that the intervention will have a significant impact once completed.

Project scope and funding

The ₦1.3 billion project includes repairing existing boreholes and replacing damaged pumps to ensure sustainable water supply. Supported by Mercy Corps and private financiers, it overcomes years of delays due to funding and security challenges. Otti revealed that the Aba Regional Water Project has reached about 95% completion, indicating progress in reviving water infrastructure in the commercial city.

Commissioning details

Otti explained that both the Ubakala and Ariaria water schemes will be completed and commissioned together. He stressed that water supply is a top priority because of its direct link to public health and economic growth.

Background and challenges

Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, said the projects are part of the broader Abia Integrated WASH Accelerated Programme. He noted that previous flag-off attempts faced setbacks: the first was delayed when the financier was kidnapped on the way, and the second occurred in January last year. With Governor Otti's leadership and support from Mercy Corps, a private financier has now agreed to fund the project.

Mercy Corps commitment

Rabiu Sani, representative of the Mercy Corps Country Director, stated that the organization operates in over 40 countries and continues to support Nigerian communities. He confirmed that rehabilitation work will involve repairing boreholes, testing and replacing damaged pumps, and restoring distribution facilities for sustainable water supply.

Broader development agenda

Since taking office in 2023, Otti's administration has focused on infrastructure renewal, including roads, power supply, healthcare, and water projects. The Ubakala and Ariaria water rehabilitation projects are expected to provide clean drinking water for thousands in Umuahia and Aba upon completion.
