Easter embodies the profound essence of God's masterful plan and decisive act to restore humanity into His divine community. Celebrated by Christians worldwide as Resurrection Day, it marks the third day when our Lord Jesus Christ rose from death, assuring mankind of salvation and the hope of eternal life. This pivotal event affords humanity the possibility and opportunity to escape eternal death and damnation, forming the central doctrine of Christianity that underpins salvation.
The Significance of Easter and Human Redemption
Man is created as the Temple of the Holy Spirit, God's dwelling place, designed to live in fellowship with Him under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. This truth underscores Easter's significance, where God's contribution redeems and reestablishes the broken connection between humanity and God. As South Africa's Archbishop Desmond Tutu once remarked, nothing could have been more hopeless for humanity than to die without redemption; then Easter happened, offering a path to restoration.
Apostle Paul asserts to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 15:14 that if Christ be not risen, then our preaching and faith are in vain. God, creative by nature, created the heavens and earth, populating it with living things, including man in His image with the ability to relate to Him. However, the Original Sin, where Adam and Eve defied God's instruction, disrupted this intimate connection, leading to guilt, shame, curses, and expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
The Fall and God's Promise of Redemption
The Fall marks a pivotal moment in biblical history, severing the connection between God and humanity. Yet, in the midst of brokenness, God's loving-kindness initiated a plan for redemption. The promise of redemption, known as the Protoevangelium or first gospel, was given immediately after the Fall in Genesis 3:15, foretelling the coming Messiah who would defeat sin's power and restore the relationship.
God's initial provision for redemption involved animal sacrifice, as seen in Genesis 3:21, where He made garments of skin for Adam and Eve. This act symbolised substitution, atonement, and God's initiative, foreshadowing Jesus' ultimate sacrifice. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, commemorated during Easter, fulfill God's decision to redeem humanity, as succinctly stated in John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.
Restoration Through Jesus Christ
Through Jesus Christ, God restored the broken connection, enabling humanity's spiritual worthiness to fellowship, worship, and glorify Him eternally. Hebrews 10:4-5 and John 1:29 affirm that Christ's sacrifice takes away the sin of the world, offering reconciliation and new life. Redemption through Jesus restored the relationship, opening the way for a deeper connection, as Ephesians 2:18 and John 14:16-17 describe access to the Father through the Holy Spirit.
Upon salvation, the Holy Spirit resides in believers, making them the Temple of the Holy Spirit, as stated in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. This habitation signifies God's presence, transformed life, and new identity, empowering believers to honor God, walk in the Spirit, and reflect His glory. The implications are profound: believers become the habitation of God, called to live for His glory.
God's Redemption Plan and Its Achievements
God established a system of sacrifices that foreshadowed Jesus' ultimate sacrifice. Through Incarnation, Jesus lived a sinless life and died on the cross, accomplishing propitiation, substitution, reconciliation, redemption, and salvation. His resurrection demonstrated power over sin and death, providing a means for reconciliation.
God's redemption plan works through faith, repentance, regeneration, and justification. Individuals must put their faith in Jesus, repent, and receive new life, declared righteous based on Jesus' righteousness. This action restored humanity's fellowship with God, renewed worship integrity, and purified humanity to participate in God's eternal divine community under Jesus' Lordship.
Easter's Message of Love and Choice
Easter celebrates God's unquantifiable love for humanity, reconciling Himself through Jesus Christ to enable humanity to fulfill its purpose: to glorify and live in eternal fellowship with Him. As John 3:17 states, God sent His Son not to condemn the world but to save it. This ultimate demonstration of love ensures no one is left behind, but it remains a choice for every individual to accept or reject.
Salvation through our risen Lord is free, but it must be earned through faith and action. May these reflections inspire a commitment to walk with God through His Son Jesus Christ.
