Japanese Ambassador Showcases Washoku and Sake at 'Taste of Japan' Event in Lagos

The Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, Mr. Suzuki Hideo, emphasized the cultural significance and global acclaim of Japanese food and beverages as attendees gathered in Lagos for the "Taste of Japan" event, organized by the Japanese Embassy. This initiative aims to introduce Nigerians to the richness of Japanese culinary arts and cultural traditions while fostering stronger people-to-people connections between the two nations.

Lagos as an Ideal Venue for Cultural Showcase

Speaking at the Lagos Continental Hotel on Victoria Island last weekend, Ambassador Hideo noted that Lagos, as Nigeria's bustling commercial hub where diverse cultures converge, provided the perfect backdrop to present Japan's culinary heritage. "Today is all about enjoying Japanese tastes and flavors," he stated, expressing his enthusiasm for sharing Japan's food and beverages with guests in the city.

UNESCO Recognition of Japanese Traditions

According to Hideo, traditional Japanese cuisine, known as Washoku, along with the traditional knowledge and skills involved in sake production, have both been designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. He elaborated that these practices embody core Japanese values, including:

Immersive Tasting Experience for Guests

Participants at the event enjoyed a comprehensive tasting session featuring over 20 varieties of Japanese beverages and foods. This allowed them to compare aromas and observe how flavors developed when paired with different dishes. The ambassador highlighted that the residence chef had prepared an array of Japanese specialties, such as sushi and tempura, to complement the beverages and offer a more complete culinary journey.

Cultural Enrichment Beyond Food

In addition to the food tasting, attendees were treated to a matcha experience and a performance of Bon Odori, a traditional Japanese dance. These activities were designed to deepen appreciation for Japanese culture and provide a holistic view of its artistic expressions.

Acknowledgments and Distinguished Attendees

Ambassador Hideo expressed gratitude to Nigerian partners and Japanese companies that supported the event, making the tasting possible. Special recognition was given to Mrs. Hidemi Obiorah and her company for their dedication and pivotal role in organizing the occasion. Dignitaries present included the President and Chairman of Council of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Engr. Leye Kupoluyi, among other notable figures.
