Football enthusiasts gathered on Monday at the French Institute in Wuse, Abuja, for a live viewing party of the World Cup match between France and Senegal, in an event aimed at celebrating football as a bridge for friendship, cultural exchange and international cooperation. The event was organised by the French Embassy in Nigeria and attracted diplomats, including the Ambassador of France, Mr Marc Fonbaustier, senior embassy officials, and football fans supporting both nations.
Lively Atmosphere and Exhibition
The atmosphere was lively and communal, as guests also toured a pictorial exhibition highlighting iconic football moments from various years, including 1939, 1982, 1985, 1986 and 2006. Speaking to The Guardian, Bertrand de Seissan, Head of Communication at the French Embassy, said the viewing party was designed to create a welcoming environment where fans could connect and celebrate the game together.
He said the event reflected the spirit of unity football inspires, as well as France's broader commitment to strengthening relations with Nigeria through partnerships based on shared interests and mutual benefit. De Seissan noted ongoing French development initiatives in Nigeria, including interventions in food security, vocational training and public transportation, particularly in Lagos and Kaduna, implemented through the French Development Agency (AFD).
Investments and Sports Development
He also referenced recent investments by French companies announced at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi in May 2026, including a $300 million partnership between Accor Group and Shoreline Group in the hospitality sector. On sports development, he disclosed the embassy's collaboration with the Moses Simon Foundation to support a youth football tournament and a girls' football training camp in Kaduna.
“The World Cup brings people together in a unique way. We aimed to provide a space for supporters of both the Senegalese and French teams to enjoy the match and create lasting memories,” he said.
Unity Through Football
For many attendees, the event underscored football's power to transcend competition and foster unity. Senegalese supporter Titilola Isaac described the gathering as a remarkable display of international friendship and sportsmanship, praising the French Embassy for creating an inclusive environment where fans could celebrate the game regardless of team allegiance. Although Senegal suffered defeat, she noted that the atmosphere remained vibrant and welcoming throughout the match.
French supporter John Atafe expressed delight over France's victory while acknowledging the strong performance of the Senegalese team, particularly in the first half. He said France's win reflected resilience and a measure of luck. Atafe also commended the sportsmanship shown by Senegalese fans, adding that their gracious response to defeat helped make the occasion a memorable celebration of football's ability to unite people across cultures.
