The historic Imam Gambari Mosque in Ilorin has officially reopened following extensive renovations, marking a significant moment for Islamic heritage in Nigeria. The 217-year-old religious center welcomed Governors AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State and Professor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State during the ceremonial reopening that attracted dignitaries from across the country.
Preserving Islamic Heritage
The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, who performed the official opening ceremony, emphasized the importance of maintaining religious heritage. The royal leader called on worshippers and community members to contribute generously toward the mosque's ongoing maintenance, describing the preservation effort as both a religious duty and cultural responsibility.
Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Solihu, the Chief Imam of Ilorin, expressed gratitude to both governors for their support. He highlighted the deep Islamic connection between Kwara and Borno states, urging continued promotion of brotherhood and heritage to strengthen inter-regional relationships.
Symbol of Unity and Scholarship
Justice Idris Abdullah Haroon, the retired Grand Khadi of Kwara State who chaired the Mosque Reconstruction Committee, described the renovated structure as representing faith, unity, and academic pursuit. He revealed that the original mosque was constructed around 1808 through the generosity of the Gobir family, whose descendants have maintained their support through generations.
The reconstruction project began in 2018 after receiving approval from the Emir and subsequently gained full community backing. Despite facing financial challenges during the process, the project reached completion under determined leadership.
Community-Driven Completion
Alhaji Yakubu Gobir, the Seriki Gobir and Madawaki of Ilorin, took full responsibility for seeing the project through to completion. He acknowledged the collective effort that made the renovation possible, citing strong community spirit and dedicated leadership.
The newly formed committee will manage the mosque's maintenance, with plans to employ staff specifically for its upkeep. Gobir extended appreciation to the Emir for guidance, Governor AbdulRazaq for support, and all contractors, artisans, and donors who contributed to the project's success.
The renovated Imam Gambari Mosque now features expanded capacity, a library, and modern facilities while maintaining its traditional architectural significance. Originally serving as one of the earliest centers for Jumu'at prayers, tafsir sessions, and Qur'anic studies in Ilorin, the mosque continues its educational mission with enhanced resources.
Among the prominent figures attending the reopening were the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, who accompanied Governor Zulum, along with other distinguished community leaders and Islamic scholars.
