Lafarge Africa Plc, a leading building solutions company in Nigeria, has reaffirmed its dedication to sustainability through the complete restoration of the historic Independence Memorial Obelisk at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos. The project was officially commissioned on November 21, 2025, marking a significant milestone in preserving Nigeria's cultural heritage.
Preserving National History Through Sustainable Methods
The rehabilitation project focused on multiple critical aspects including structural strengthening, aesthetic renewal, accessibility upgrades, and careful restoration of symbolic carvings and historical inscriptions. Throughout the process, Lafarge maintained the monument's original design and historical significance while incorporating modern sustainable building practices.
During the unveiling ceremony, Group Managing Director and CEO of Lafarge Africa Plc, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, emphasized that the project reflects the company's contribution to Nigeria's infrastructure renewal. He explained that the renovation incorporated Ecoplanet Elephant, Lafarge's eco-friendly cement solution that delivers structural durability with at least 30% fewer carbon emissions compared to conventional cement.
Government Officials Praise Heritage Conservation Effort
The event attracted high-profile government officials who commended Lafarge's commitment to preserving Nigeria's historical assets. Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, noted that preserving historical monuments like the Obelisk is essential to nurturing a culturally aware nation, particularly as Nigeria focuses on the intersection of history, innovation, and sustainable development.
The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Commissioner for Tourism, Arts & Culture Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, stated that "The Obelisk stands as a powerful symbol of heritage and sustained development—reflecting the strength of our diversity and the enduring hope of the Nigerian people."
Historical Significance of the Independence Memorial Obelisk
According to Lucia Shittu, Managing Director of Tafawa Balewa Square Management Board, the Obelisk represents more than just a monument. "It is a living testament to Nigeria's journey toward independence and democracy," she explained. "As the site where the Union Jack was lowered, it holds deep historical significance and continues to inspire national pride and reflection."
The Obelisk stands within the 14.6-hectare expanse of Tafawa Balewa Square and serves as a constant reminder of Nigeria's independence struggle. The restoration ensures that future generations can continue to learn from and appreciate this important national symbol.
