Sanwo-Olu Celebrates Seyi Tinubu's Installation as Okanlomo Eyo of Lagos
Sanwo-Olu Hails Seyi Tinubu as Okanlomo Eyo of Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has extended his congratulations to Barrister Oluwaseyi Tinubu following his installation as the Okanlomo of Eyo Oba Alakete Pupa, Laba Ekun. The governor described the prestigious traditional title as a recognition of Tinubu's service, character, and dedication to cultural heritage.

A Title Reflecting Service and Cultural Commitment

In a message shared on his official Instagram page, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the significance of the honour. He wished Seyi Tinubu strength and clarity as he takes on the new responsibilities associated with the role. The installation ceremony was held in anticipation of the upcoming Eyo Festival on Saturday, December 27, 2025.

The Okanlomo title is deeply respected within Yoruba tradition. It signifies loyalty to the royal institution and a steadfast commitment to preserving customs, especially those linked to the Eyo cultural heritage. This installation in Lagos comes shortly after Tinubu received a related honour. Last week, he was installed as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, in Oyo town. These consecutive recognitions highlight his growing stature within Yoruba traditional institutions across the South-West.

Philanthropy and the 2025 Eyo Festival

Beyond his traditional roles, Seyi Tinubu is known for his philanthropic work. His initiatives have focused on supporting youth, education, vocational training, and humanitarian outreach in various communities.

The Eyo Festival, for which his installation serves as a prelude, is one of Lagos's most important cultural and spiritual events. It is rooted in history and serves to celebrate the state's rich heritage while honouring the memory of departed notable indigenes. The festival acts as a spiritual rite to escort souls and cleanse the city, symbolising renewal.

This year's edition is dedicated to four iconic figures who significantly contributed to Lagos's development:

  • Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji
  • Alhaji Lateef Jakande
  • General Mobolaji Johnson
  • Sir Michael Otedola

A Recognition of Cultural Stewardship

Seyi Tinubu's installation as the Okanlomo Eyo ultimately honours his ongoing commitment to community service and the promotion of Lagos's cultural legacy. The event underscores the enduring importance of traditional institutions in contemporary Lagos society, bridging the past with the present through ceremony and honour.
