Catholic Priest Clarifies Knights' Role: Supportive Service, Not Secret Society
In a significant address during an investiture ceremony, the Very Rev. Father Gasper Olanrewaju, Parish Priest of the Catholic Church of the Presentation in Abule Egba, Lagos, has emphatically described the Order of Knights and Ladies as an indispensable arm of the Catholic Church. He made these remarks while presiding over the investiture of Sir Benedict Okhumale and Lady Theodora Okhumale as new members of The Knight of St. John International and Ladies Auxiliary, under the Lagos Grand Commandery of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos.
Event Highlights and Distinguished Attendees
The ceremony, held on the church premises in Abule-Egba, Lagos, was attended by a distinguished gathering of Knights and Ladies from the order. Key figures included Sir Simon Ochi, the first trustee of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, who represented the Lagos Grand President, Brig. General Paulinus Nwankwo. Additionally, Lady Ifeoma Ezeugwu, the District 16 President, represented the Lagos Grand President, Noble Sister Okenyi Sidney-Moka.
Also present was Dr. Oluwole Kukoyi, a foremost medical practitioner and the Pioneer Past District Governor of Rotary International, District 9111, accompanied by his wife, Rev. Sola. This assembly underscored the event's importance within the church community.
Dispelling Misconceptions About Knights
Rev. Father Olanrewaju took the opportunity to address and correct widespread misconceptions about the Knights. He stated, "Knights are not a secret society as erroneously assumed by some people." He elaborated on their historical role, noting that their existence in the church dates back to before the invasion by Muslims aimed at taking over the church.
According to Olanrewaju, the Knights were ordered by the Pope to defend the church, which is why they traditionally carry swords. However, he clarified that these swords now serve only as symbols of their defensive heritage. Today, Knights no longer engage in physical battles but have shifted to rendering supportive services to the church, focusing on humanitarian and spiritual contributions.
Call for Government Action on Security
The cleric expressed concern over the government's failure to adequately protect the church from terrorist threats. He emphasized that it is the government's responsibility to ensure the safety of religious institutions, especially since the church no longer carries arms for defense. Olanrewaju urged authorities to enhance security measures to prevent terrorists from harming vulnerable individuals, highlighting the ongoing need for protection in the face of modern challenges.
New Members Embrace Service Opportunities
Sir Benedict Okhumale, one of the newly invested Knights, shared his perspective on joining the order. He revealed that his admission into Knighthood provides him with a valuable opportunity to serve humanity through his treasure, talent, and time. Okhumale expressed pride in being part of The Knight of St. John International, which he noted is the oldest Knight order in the Catholic Church, underscoring its longstanding tradition of service and dedication.
This investiture event not only celebrated new members but also reinforced the vital role of Knights and Ladies in supporting the church's mission, countering myths, and advocating for greater security in the community.
