Tinubu Carries Sacred Staff at Lagos Eyo Festival 2025

Lagos State witnessed a significant cultural spectacle on Saturday, December 27, 2025, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu graced the grand finale of the iconic Eyo Festival. The event, held at the historic Tafawa Balewa Square, saw the president fully immersed in the traditions of Lagos.

Tinubu Embraces Tradition in Full Regalia

President Tinubu participated in the festivities dressed in the classic Eyo attire: a white robe complemented by a damask sash over his shoulder and a distinctive hat decorated with bold stars. In a powerful symbolic gesture, he carried the long, sacred staff known as the 'opambata', just like the other Eyo masquerades. This staff is a central emblem of the festival, used for blessings, greetings, and representing the authority and historical lineage of the celebration.

A Festival Steeped in History and Significance

The 2025 edition marked the first holding of the Eyo Festival in eight years, with its origins tracing back to 1854. The week-long carnival, which began with homage paid to President Tinubu at his Lagos residence on Sunday, December 21, showcases the rich cultural heritage of Lagos. Various Yoruba families participated, displaying regalia, dance, and promoting messages of unity and peace.

In a statement delivered by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the festival as "a great rekindling of our culture". He emphasized that it celebrates the achievements and exemplary lives of distinguished Nigerians, extending beyond eminent Lagosians.

President Highlights Tourism Potential of Cultural Assets

President Tinubu also pointed out the strategic timing of the festival, coinciding with the popular "Detty December" period when Lagos welcomes a large influx of diaspora Nigerians and foreign visitors. He underscored the untapped tourism value of Nigeria's cultural traditions.

"It is a reminder that our culture and traditions hold great tourism potential," the president stated. "Indeed, our cultural assets can serve as valuable resources for destination promotion." He noted that the spectacle of white-robed figures parading through the streets sends a resounding message about national and local identity.

The president concluded by encouraging all attendees to celebrate peacefully and ensure the safety of everyone involved in the festivities. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was also present at the significant cultural event.
