Woman Exposes Church's Apathy After Mother's Death Over Tithe Booklet
A young woman has publicly shared a heartbreaking letter written by her father to their church, revealing a shocking case of institutional neglect and religious bureaucracy following her mother's untimely death. The letter, discovered among her mother's belongings, details the family's struggle to secure a proper burial for the deceased woman, who passed away at just 36 years old.
Church Demands Proof of Tithe Payment for Burial
The daughter, who was only 12 years old at the time of her mother's passing, recounted how the church refused to officiate the burial ceremony without seeing the original booklet proving that her mother had paid tithes. Despite her father presenting a photocopy of the document, church authorities insisted on full evidence, forcing him to make multiple trips from the East to Gusau in a futile attempt to resolve the issue.
"I remember my dad taking multiple trips to Gusau from the East because the church refused to bury my mum without seeing her tithe booklet," the daughter wrote. "It didn't matter that he had a photocopy; they wanted full evidence."
Family Barred from Funeral, Daughters Overlooked
In a further display of apathy, the church proceeded with the burial without the family's presence, barring them from attending the funeral. The daughter noted that no one from the church ever checked up on the grieving family, which included her 18-month-old sister at the time. "Even after my mum was buried and we were barred from attending the funeral, it didn't occur to anyone to point out the absence of her daughters," she lamented. She only discovered the location of her mother's grave last year, highlighting the prolonged emotional trauma.
Mother's Devotion Contrasted with Church's Indifference
The daughter emphasized her mother's deep commitment to the church, describing how she "literally poured herself into that church—prayer meetings, church cleaning, and everything—she was at the forefront." Yet, this devotion was met with cold indifference in her time of need. "The only reward she got was losing her life in a God-forsaken marriage," the daughter concluded, expressing her disillusionment with organized religion.
Now an adult, she reflects on the incident as a formative experience that has shaped her views on faith. "It's all in the past now, but nothing will make me lose myself in the process of practicing any religion at all," she stated, underscoring the lasting impact of the church's actions on her personal beliefs and trust in religious institutions.
