Lagos Monarch Reiterates Call for Unity, Condemns Vandalism of Public Property
In a powerful address during the annual post-Eid-el-Fitr prayers held at the Lagos Central Mosque, His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwanu Babatunde Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, has once again emphasized the critical importance of peaceful coexistence among all residents of Lagos State. The revered traditional ruler stressed that harmony, transcending ethnic and religious differences, is absolutely essential for ensuring stability and fostering better development both individually and collectively.
Harmony as a Catalyst for Socio-Economic Growth
Oba Akiolu articulated that unity among the diverse populace of Lagos remains a fundamental pillar for sustaining peace and driving meaningful socio-economic progress not only within the state but across the entire nation. He highlighted that such cohesion allows for a stable environment where development initiatives can thrive, benefiting every citizen.
The monarch also issued a stern rebuke against the vandalism of public facilities, particularly questioning the senseless destruction of solar-powered streetlights installed on major roads and thoroughfares. "If you are not happy with the government, it should not lead to damaging public property," he declared, urging residents to consider the broader communal impact of such actions.
Prayers for Leadership and National Progress
During the solemn gathering, the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Sulaimon Abou-Nolla, led special prayers for key national and state figures. Divine guidance, wisdom, and strength were sought for President Bola Tinubu and his family, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his cabinet, the Oba of Lagos and his family, as well as for the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.
Imam Abou-Nolla underscored the enduring and cordial relationship between the Lagos Central Mosque and the royal palace, describing it as a robust platform for promoting interfaith understanding, peace, and social cohesion. "The relationship between the palace and the central mosque is longstanding and cordial. It is a tradition that after Eid-el-Fitr, we come to seek blessings and pray for peaceful coexistence in Lagos," he explained.
Sustaining Ramadan Virtues for Nation-Building
The Chief Imam further encouraged Nigerians to internalize and practice the spiritual lessons and virtues cultivated during the holy month of Ramadan. He emphasized that qualities such as patience, self-control, and compassion must extend beyond the fasting period into everyday life, contributing to a more harmonious society.
Additionally, Imam Abou-Nolla called on all leaders to prioritize good governance and urged citizens to remain patriotic and steadfastly committed to the ongoing project of nation-building. "We pray for our President and all leaders that God will guide them, and for ourselves that we remain steadfast in building a peaceful society," he added, reinforcing the collective responsibility shared by both leadership and the citizenry.
