The ancient city of Ile-Ife in Osun State was a beehive of activity and grandeur on Saturday, December 7, 2024, as eminent personalities from across Nigeria gathered to celebrate the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
A Gathering of Nigeria's Political and Traditional Elite
The historic event saw a remarkable convergence of the country's leadership. The roll call of dignitaries included former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, was also present, alongside Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun. Their presence underscored the national significance and the widespread respect commanded by the Yoruba paramount ruler.
First Lady Honoured as Yeye Asiwaju Ile Oodua
A highlight of the ceremony was the conferment of a significant traditional title on the nation's First Lady. Senator Oluremi Tinubu was installed by the Ooni as the Yeye Asiwaju Ile Oodua. In her brief remarks, a grateful Tinubu thanked the Ooni and the people of Ile-Ife for the honour. "Today is not a day of long speeches. I want to thank the people of Ile-Ife and the Ooni of Ile-Ife for bestowing such honour on me," she stated.
Praises for a Decade of Cultural Renaissance
In his address, Governor Ademola Adeleke lauded Oba Ogunwusi for his transformative decade on the throne. He noted that the monarch's reign had sparked a dramatic revival of Yoruba tradition and culture. Adeleke pointed out that the Ooni had successfully rebranded these cultural heritage elements, fostering a deep sense of pride among Yoruba people worldwide.
Congratulations also poured in from other royal quarters. The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, through a statement by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, extended warm felicitations. Speaking on behalf of other Yoruba traditional rulers, the Alaafin commended the Ooni for his commitment, resilience, and visionary leadership.
The Alaafin's statement further highlighted that Oba Ogunwusi's vast exposure, knowledge, and charisma, acquired before his ascension, have been instrumental in expanding the influence of his domain. He expressed confidence that the monarch's wisdom, warmth, and friendliness would continue to promote peace and civility within the kingdom and beyond.
