His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, the Obong of Calabar and Natural Ruler of the Efik Kingdom, has officially inaugurated the 14th edition of the Utomo Obong festival. The proclamation on Monday, December 16, 2025, at the monarch's palace in Calabar marks the start of a week-long cultural and traditional celebration for the Yuletide season.
A Unifying Platform for Culture and Thanksgiving
The Obong described the event as a significant occasion for Cross River State, its indigenes, residents, and the Efik diaspora. He emphasized that Utomo Obong has evolved into a crucial platform for cultural reflection, unity, and giving thanks. The annual festival is a traditional homage paid to the Treaty King.
This year's celebration carries the theme "Give Honour to Whom Honour Is Due." It is organized by the Obong of Calabar Executive Forum, led by High Chief Gershom Henshaw. The monarch expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming show of love and support from the people, viewing it as a reaffirmation of communal unity and respect for tradition.
Commendations and Calls for Support
The revered king commended the organizers for their steadfast dedication to preserving and promoting Efik culture. He also used the occasion to acknowledge development efforts at both state and national levels.
The Obong appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his strides in the state and specifically praised Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, for the visible impact of his administration across various sectors. He described the governor's projects as commendable and urged citizens to close ranks and offer the necessary support to steer the state to greater heights.
Prayers for the Season and an Appeal for Harmony
Offering prayers for the Yuletide period, the monarch asked God for blessings, protection, success, wisdom, and good health for the people. He encouraged active participation in the festivities, noting that the state government has formally included Utomo Obong in its official cultural calendar.
Emphasizing the need for peace, the Obong urged everyone to embrace harmony and shun negative vices that could hinder development. He appealed for unity, tolerance, and the avoidance of divisive enmity throughout the celebrations.
Concluding the historic event, the Obong of Calabar formally declared: "In view of the above, I hereby declare the 14th Utomo Obong celebration open, in the name of our Lord." This declaration sets the tone for a week dedicated to culture, homage, and thanksgiving across the Efik Kingdom.
