Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Dangote Fertiliser Limited have made a significant contribution to education by donating school materials valued at N241 million to 3,704 students across host communities in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. This initiative is part of the Dangote Group's ongoing commitment to fostering education and community development, unveiled during the sixth edition of the Dangote Scholarship Award Programme.
Distribution of Educational Supplies
The donation included essential items such as school bags, uniforms, sandals, and sanitary materials. Specifically, 1,348 primary school pupils from five schools and 2,356 secondary school students from four schools benefited from this intervention. The aim is to improve access to quality education and enhance the learning environment for students in these communities, addressing practical needs that can hinder academic success.
Commitment to Societal Transformation
At the event, Edwin Devakumar, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Group, reaffirmed the company's belief in education as a catalyst for societal transformation. He highlighted that since the scholarship scheme's launch in 2019, it has steadily expanded in both reach and impact, supporting hundreds of students annually. The programme was paused in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but has since resumed with renewed vigor, demonstrating the group's resilience and dedication to educational advancement.
Community Appreciation and Appeals
Rasaki Bamidele Kasali, Executive Chairman of Lekki LCDA, praised the interventions as impactful and timely. While expressing gratitude for the support extended to the 15 host communities, he appealed to Dangote to consider extending similar initiatives to neighbouring communities, emphasizing the broader need for educational support in the region.
Oba Kazeem Olumuyiwa Ogunbekun, the Onilekki of Lekki Land, also expressed appreciation for the company's consistency in community engagement. He noted that Dangote's interventions have positively impacted livelihoods and strengthened community relations, fostering a sense of partnership and mutual benefit.
Life-Changing Impact on Beneficiaries
Beneficiaries of the programme shared their gratitude, with one notable example being Yusiot Taiwo, a graduate from the City & Guilds of London. Taiwo described the initiative as life-changing, noting that it provided a pathway to employment with Dangote Fertiliser, illustrating how such support can lead to tangible career opportunities and personal growth.
This donation underscores Dangote Group's role as a key player in corporate social responsibility, particularly in the education sector. By investing in the future of young students, the group aims to drive long-term development and empowerment in Nigeria, aligning with broader goals of societal progress and economic stability.
