Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Earns PhD in Laws from University of Calabar
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has been awarded a Doctor of Laws (PhD) degree by the University of Calabar during its 38th convocation ceremony held recently. This prestigious academic honor was conferred upon the lawmaker in recognition of his rigorous doctoral research, which was also highlighted as one of the most outstanding contributions to knowledge at the university's Achievement Exhibition.
A Transformative Academic Journey
While delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the PhD graduating class at the convocation ground, Deputy Speaker Kalu described his doctoral journey as "demanding, humbling, and transformative." He emphasized that the process required immense resilience, discipline, and intellectual commitment, reflecting on the challenges faced by doctoral candidates nationwide.
Quoting the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, Kalu stated, "The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet," underscoring that the sacrifices behind every thesis—from sleepless nights to intense academic struggles—highlight the true value of such achievements. He noted that this honor holds deep personal significance, as the University of Calabar has been instrumental in shaping his academic path, having previously earned his LL.B and LL.M degrees from the same institution.
PhD as a Call to Responsibility
Kalu stressed that a PhD should not be viewed merely as a title but as a call to responsibility. He urged fellow graduands to ensure their research contributes meaningfully to societal development, citing former South African President Nelson Mandela's assertion that "education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
The lawmaker referenced data from the National Bureau of Statistics, which indicates that fewer than 100,000 Nigerians hold doctoral degrees in a population exceeding 220 million. He described PhD holders as a "narrow community" bound not just by privilege but by a profound responsibility to drive innovation and national development through intellectual leadership.
Legislative Commitment to Education
Highlighting his legislative efforts, Kalu reiterated his commitment to expanding access to education in Nigeria. He pointed to his role in establishing institutions such as:
- The Federal College of Education, Bende
- The Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item Bende
- The Federal University, Okigwe
According to Kalu, these institutions were conceived as long-term investments in Nigeria's intellectual and human capital development, rather than mere political accomplishments. He called on fellow PhD holders to serve as agents of transformation by bridging the gap between academic research and real-world solutions, thereby addressing pressing societal challenges.
Recognition and Gratitude
Deputy Speaker Kalu expressed his appreciation to the University of Calabar's Governing Council, Senate, academic staff, and supervisors for recognizing his research as one of the most outstanding contributions to knowledge. This acknowledgment at the Achievement Exhibition further validates the impact and relevance of his doctoral work in the field of law.
The conferment of this PhD degree marks a significant milestone in Kalu's academic and professional career, reinforcing his dedication to education and national development. As Nigeria continues to grapple with educational disparities, his achievement serves as an inspiration for aspiring scholars and underscores the importance of advanced degrees in fostering societal progress.
