Creative Consultant Tolu Fagbure Shares Controversial Views on Nollywood Actors

Creative consultant Tolu Fagbure has stirred reactions in the Nigerian film industry with his candid opinions about actor Itele and other Nollywood stars. During a podcast interview, Fagbure claimed that Itele has no business making films for the cinema, arguing that the actor's movies are better suited for YouTube. He urged Itele to stop attempting to produce cinema releases, a statement that has sparked widespread debate among fans and industry insiders.

Fagbure Stands by His Remarks on Itele’s Films

Fagbure expressed no regret for his comments, specifically referencing Itele's film Kesari as an example of poor quality. He questioned the film's worth, reminding viewers that cinema tickets cost between ₦6,500 and ₦7,000. “Itele should stay on YouTube, frankly speaking. I have no apology for what I said. I have seen one of his movies, Kesari. What? Is that a movie? Do you know how much people pay to watch films at the cinema? ₦6,500, ₦7,000,” he said. The critic emphasized that his opinion was based on the high standards expected of cinema releases.

Comparing Funke Akindele and Mercy Aigbe

In the same interview, Fagbure acknowledged Funke Akindele's exceptional success at the box office, noting that any film she releases is almost guaranteed to perform well. He predicted she would continue to break her own records. However, he argued that Mercy Aigbe tells better stories than both Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham. “Mercy Aigbe has better stories than Funke Akindele, but Funke Akindele has a special grace that helps her sell her films. There is no time she releases a movie that she will not break her own record,” Fagbure stated.
