Spotify has officially launched audiobooks for listeners in Nigeria, starting from 14 October. The rollout is part of Spotify's global expansion of audiobooks from 22 markets to over 180 by the end of 2026, reaching more than 750 million people who can stream or purchase books on the platform.
Audiobooks+ Add-On for Nigerian Users
In Nigeria, both Spotify Free and Premium users can subscribe to Audiobooks+, a monthly add-on that provides 15 hours of audiobook listening for ₦2,300. Only the time spent actually listening is counted, and the hours reset every billing cycle. For those needing more time, a 10-hour top-up is available for ₦2,700, or listeners can buy an individual title to keep permanently.
According to Owen Smith, VP of Audiobooks at Spotify, "Books change how we see the world, and the people in it. For a lot of people, audiobooks are how they find their way back to reading, on the commute, on a walk, or at the end of a long day. Bringing audiobooks to more than 180 markets means millions more people can discover that, and authors and publishers can reach readers they’ve never been able to reach before."
Features Designed for Everyday Listening
Spotify has introduced several features to enhance the audiobook experience. Page Match allows users to read a few chapters in bed and then continue on their morning commute, right where they left off. More than one million readers have used Page Match to switch between print, ebook, and audio formats. Users can scan a book's ISBN barcode and use page numbers to find their place, with Page Match supporting over 30 languages.
The app now includes a dedicated Audiobooks space for searching, browsing, and discovering titles, with recommendations based on each listener's preferences across music, podcasts, and books. Spotify saves progress across more than 2,000 devices, so users can start on their phone and continue in the car or on a speaker. A Sleep Timer is available for night-time listening, and audiobooks can be downloaded for offline listening, just like music and podcasts.
A Bigger Stage for Nigerian Authors
Spotify has emphasized that all its audiobook partnerships are non-exclusive, aiming to give authors the largest possible audience. Through Spotify for Authors, local publishers and self-published authors in Nigeria can upload their audiobooks and reach listeners in more than 180 markets, with insights into who is listening. The catalogue in Nigeria is expected to grow as new partners join and local authors upload their work.
Three years ago this fall, Spotify introduced audiobooks into Premium to create a better home for book lovers, authors, and publishers. Over the past year, monthly audiobook listeners grew nearly 40% and listening hours climbed more than 30%. Since launching just over a year ago, Audiobooks+ has grown to more than one million subscribers.
How to Get Started
To access audiobooks, users need to update to the latest version of the Spotify app and open the Audiobooks hub, or search for any title. After choosing a book, they can add Audiobooks+ and manage their plan at spotify.com/account, then press play. The service is now available to Nigerian listeners, integrating audiobooks into the moments they already fill with music and podcasts, from the Lagos go-slow to a quiet evening at home.
