In a powerful demonstration of interfaith unity, a prominent church in Kwara State has honoured a Muslim senator for his dedicated work in promoting peace and religious tolerance.
Church Recognises Senator's Bridge-Building Efforts
The Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Alabukun Headquarters District in Ilorin, conferred its Peace Ambassador Award on Senator Saliu Mustapha during its 38th Annual Harvest Thanksgiving ceremony. The event, held in the Ita-Alamu area of Ilorin, saw the church leadership publicly acknowledge the lawmaker's consistent role in strengthening relationships between different religious communities across the state.
Presenting the award on Sunday, December 7, 2025, the General Superintendent of the church, Prophet (Dr.) Michael Olaosebikan Adio, commended Senator Mustapha for his open-minded leadership. He highlighted the senator's reputation for fairness and his active support for Christian programmes and activities, despite being a devout Muslim.
A History of Interfaith Engagement
This church award is not an isolated gesture. Earlier in 2025, the Kwara State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) held a special prayer session for Senator Mustapha for similar reasons. During an Easter Monday celebration at St. James Anglican Church in Maraba, Ilorin, the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Adewole, stated that the Christian body was deeply impressed by the senator's goodwill and constructive engagement with their community.
The prayer session was specifically organised to seek divine guidance and success for the senator in his public service, underscoring the genuine appreciation he has garnered from Christian leaders.
Prophet Adio, while honouring the senator, quoted a biblical passage from Psalms to encapsulate the spirit of the occasion: "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity… for there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore." He described the senator as having an "insatiable passion for religious harmony, unity, peace, and security in Kwara state."
Senator's Focus Amidst Political Landscape
The award comes against a backdrop of political rumours which Senator Mustapha has previously addressed. The lawmaker, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District, had earlier denied claims of defecting from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His media aide, Nasif Solagberu, issued a statement reaffirming the senator's commitment to the APC and stating that he remains focused on his responsibilities, undeterred by unfounded propaganda.
This event in Ilorin stands as a significant counter-narrative to stories of religious division, showcasing a practical model of cooperation and mutual respect. The recognition of a Muslim political figure by a Christian institution highlights the potential for collaborative leadership in fostering national cohesion.
