Nigerian singer Davido has firmly stated he will not apologise to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo following their recent social media clash, insisting he did nothing wrong by posting the governor's academic records.
Origin of the Feud
The dispute traces back to election campaigns when Okpebholo mocked Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido's uncle, claiming he dances too much to govern effectively. In response, Davido posted what he described as an alleged copy of Okpebholo's WASSCE results, which reportedly contained multiple 'D7' grades, and questioned the governor's ability to write his own social media statements.
Despite facing criticism from those who felt he disrespected an elder and public official, Davido doubled down during a recent interview, firmly refusing to issue any form of apology.
Davido's Justification
In his words: "I am not going to apologise. I didn't do anything wrong. I was only letting the people of the state know the kind of results their governor has. You left your state, came to another state to rig and then you start talking that my Uncle is a dancer, he is not a serious….the road to your government house is not done…First of all, you were not even elected, you were selected…you didn't win those votes. You do not know what it is to win an election…I feel so bad for his kids because they will be like 'see what my daddy is doing'. You are abusing a sitting governor in his own state…."
The singer's comments have sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting his boldness while others condemn his approach towards a public official. The video of Davido speaking was shared on Instagram by Linda Ikeji's blog, drawing further attention to the ongoing controversy.
Impact and Reactions
This incident highlights the intersection of celebrity influence and political discourse in Nigeria, as Davido's actions have brought national focus to the governor's academic background and his remarks about Adeleke. The feud continues to generate public debate, with no signs of reconciliation as Davido remains resolute in his stance.
