Social media personality and self-proclaimed financial analyst GehGeh has publicly criticised Afrobeats superstar Wizkid for his alleged failure to acknowledge a major fan tribute, while simultaneously praising his colleague Davido for his supportive actions.
The Core of the Controversy: A Viral Tribute Ignored
In a video shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page, GehGeh focused his comments on comedian and musician Carter Efe's 2023 viral song, 'Machala'. The track was a celebratory tribute to Wizkid that gained massive traction across social media platforms. GehGeh described the song as 'one of the biggest fan-made tribute songs in Afrobeat history', arguing that Carter Efe used it to glorify Wizkid's brand and legacy.
According to GehGeh, Wizkid's apparent refusal to publicly acknowledge or support the effort goes beyond mere pride. He framed it as an unwillingness to share influence and platform with an upcoming creator who openly celebrated him. 'To whom much is given, much is expected,' GehGeh stated, emphasising the responsibility he believes successful artists have to lift others.
Davido's Approach Highlighted as a Contrast
GehGeh drew a sharp contrast by highlighting Davido's relationship with Carter Efe. He credited Davido's appearance on Carter Efe's Twitch livestream as a pivotal moment that significantly boosted the comedian's profile, helping him become one of Africa's most prominent streamers. 'This man single-handedly made a star,' GehGeh said in praise of Davido's actions.
He further contextualised his criticism of Wizkid by recalling that the 'Ojuelegba' singer himself benefited from early support, specifically from veteran artist Banky W, who provided him with a crucial platform at the start of his career. GehGeh's argument centred on the idea that receiving help obligates one to pay it forward.
Netizens React to the Commentary
The video sparked diverse reactions from Nigerian netizens. Some users defended Wizkid, pointing out that fandom should not be transactional. User @smssavacion commented, 'Some of you Stan Ronaldo and Messi for years. And these two people never acknowledge una stanship... No come insult wizkid.'
Others countered by listing ways Wizkid has supported Carter Efe, such as having him perform at a show and sending him money. However, several commenters agreed with GehGeh's sentiment. @officialv2roskey opined, 'Everything geh geh just said is the real truth. Wizkid don't want to share his platform but someone shared their own for him to succeed.'
This incident is not GehGeh's first controversial take on celebrity culture. He previously commented on Nollywood veterans Aki and Pawpaw, suggesting their initial fame was heavily tied to their physical appearance. His latest commentary continues his pattern of analysing success and support within the Nigerian entertainment industry.
